I will be installing TJ flares this weekend hopefully. Doing the full set tho, not just rears. Check out xjdb.com, yo7u can probably find what you are looking for there as it is a searchable data base of XJ/MJ pics.
This is really your best bet if you want to stick to a specific budget. That and being patient. I've got maybe around $3 - $3500 into my '89 including the purchase price and it was bone stock when I got it. It now has a 4.5" RE lift, locked in the rear and soon in the front when I do the...
What he said. 3.5" lift with the stock drive shaft and its gonna slip out of the tcase some. Yes, doing a SYE would be the right way but if you are looking for a quick, cheap fix, get the driveshaft lengthened and leave the slip yoke setup there for now.

Being 1/4" steel, they should hold up just fine under abuse. Strengthening the unibody will probably be negligable but they will protect the frame rails from rock damage for the most part. They will also provide good mounting for future items like rocker protection and a cage.
Sure, 3/16" would probably be fine but why go thinner when the 1/4" was available and I only spent $28 on the steel including the single cut (was originally a 10" peice). There is just under 50 lbs of steel that I added, maybe a couple lbs more with the welds so the added weight of 1/4" is...
