I had the constant chirping coming from the around the front of the engine, tighten or loosening the belt would change the chirping but wouldn't go away. Checked the harmonic balancer it looked ok , and feels solid. Found a video on youtube recommending to loosen the screw that holds the pulley...
I had no radio for the longest time
just got a single din Nakamichi NQ711B
bluetooth, usb , aux
Sounds ok, and costs like $50 dollars
Since it is all digital media it is a small and very light unit
More than adequate for the old xj
A valve in the steering box,... I guess not accesible from outside?
And I checked the alignment, added 2° of caster, it centers better and tracks in a straight line very well

soft as there is no resistance at the steering wheel when turning, there is little feel of the road, as if the wheels were lifted of the ground
there seems to be to much power from the hydraulics
the steering works fine, it is just to easy to...

I had a very leaky steering box, it is now replaced by a remanufactured unit
Boy ! Steering is now awfully soft!
Got an alignment, added shims to increase the caster 2° but still soft, it drives in straight line...
not moving is likely due to low oil
about P0740, I had it every other day, I knew the NSS was dodgy as it started sometimes in park, others not, and my reverse light never worked, cleaned out the NSS and boy what a difference! now it drives nice and smooth , before it was revving high and...
I went through something similar, on a 1990
I screwed in sheet metal where needed
Removed rusted out areas, and before screwing new sheet metal I painted everything before with rustbullet (marine anti-rust paint) both old and new metal.
The rug was trashed and was replaced by heavy duty...
The NSS connector on m 1998 XJ does NOT match the connector shown on the manuals I have, the manuals show an 8 terminal connector in 2 rows of 4, and the connections show no continuity needed for drive, this is not what I found in my case
Took the NSS apart to clean it , and made the following...

I used contacts for a long time, first hard contacts, then soft
about 15 years ago got lasik
A few years later I got a bit of astigmatism and I have to wear glasses to read, I still can go with no glasses when exercising or working on the cars...
The bushings were all there when the TC was first taken apart and in pristine shape
I did not open the TC this time
Shifting is now nice and smooth at least in the garage, I'll drive it tomorrow when the silicon dries up.

OK, lastnigh I took of the tailhousing and the shifts are nice and smooth :yelclap:
the shaft protrudes less than 1" and still cut a little bit about 1/8"
The tailhouse has marks on the side of the pocket for the shaft, and sure enough when I put it back just for trial the shifting got very...

I beleive to remove the tailhousing I need to remove the yoke and the bolts holding the housing no c-clip :confused:
the cclip is in the original tailhousing
I think ... if not then I'll remove the c-clip

I'm having trouble to shift the TC after the SYE installation :cry:
I was lazy and had someone else did the install :explosion :sad1:
I'm 99% sure they did not cut the shift fork range even after taking down the TC twice :banghead:
This is easy enough for me to do at...
so ... I went with a friend to have a look at engine mounts :repair:
seems my driver side engine mount is not good
those POS engine mounts last less than a fart in my hand :explosion
sorry no suggestions just to mention I hae a similar problem ... 90 XJ with Np242 transfer case.
Pops out of 4wd when torque is applied, when in 4Lo it will become 2L or sometimes grinding noise.
Seems to be able to hold it longer if I hold the 4wd shifter up.
Altough when in 4h will become...
I had a somewhat similar problem in my 1990 XJ, it died randomly when hot,
the cure was a new ignition relay.
Perhaps this is the one relay that pepboys replaced at a premium price
about the squealig noise, allow me to commento on something that happened with my 1990 xj, it had a squealing noise too
it will quiet down after tightening the belt
until 2 days ago
it started squealing and then I heard something fall as a result I
lost my power steering, and the temperature...
