Interesting link from gearwhine! From 2003...when I installed the Tomken sliders on my XJ Waggy. I've had some hard hits on them and they have held up great for the past 16 years. Just my experience though.
When you have the "wet brakes" feeling, how is the pedal? Is it still hard, but just no breaking? Is it soft...like it goes to the floor? Does pumping the brake pedal help?
Not sure what prompted this resurrection of an 11 year old post, but there's a LOT of bad information in the thread! Wow. Both the NP242 and NP231 can be shifted into and out of 4High while moving at legal speed...up to 55 mph. Just back off on the gas and shift. It's only when going into or...
I don't think the NP242 came paired with the front axle CAD. My '89 has the 242 and a solid passenger side shaft...and has regular u-joints, not CV joints.
I'd look for a vacuum leak, or possibly a throttle body gasket leak. Engine produces highest vacuum when throttle is closed, and lowest vacuum at wide open throttle.
I'd put my money on "it needs to be burped". I know you are aware of this issue, but I had similar difficulty with my '89 after blowing an upper radiator hose. Did repair on the highway with new hose and couldn't, for the life of me, keep it from spewing out the fill bottle. Finally, after...
Have you been adjusting the set screw on the steering box? Some people adjust this screw in an attempt to tighten up the steering. If it's too tight, it won't self-return to center.
Have you actually been under the Jeep when someone is shifting to see where the noise is coming from? If it that loud and that noticeable, you will have no trouble ascertaining what is making the noise.
As far as the slip yoke "sliding down" due to gravity. It cannot happen! The rear...
Anything you recently did, especially right before an issue, is suspect as related to the problem! That being said, that sounds to me like a vacuum leak, which would make it "surge"...idle high as well.
As a clarification, the car should not move in 4Full Time with on of the drive shafts missing. 4Full Time utilizes a differential between front and rear output shafts...this is why you can use it full time (all the time, even on dry roads). 4Part Time should not be used on drive pavement, but...
^^^ All good advice from 8Mud, but I've got to wonder. Consider the sequence of events, changed TPS, IAC, and CPS and it worked great for a day, then began to run poorly. What would cause that to happen? Poor connection to one of the recently installed sensors? Poor adjustment or fastener...
Just to clarify for you...the transmission leak is not at the SYE. The transmission and transfer case don't share fluid, and the SYE is on the transfer case. Look for your fluid lead somewhere else.
so you've verified fuel pressure at the rail and spark at the plug. You should also verify the injectors are firing (use noid light).
also suspect it may be flooded. Try cranking with accelerator to the floor (not pumping, held at WOT). This will turn off the injectors and allow the motor to...
The oil seal for the D30 is at the pumpkin. Not sure what you mean by "outer" seal. The only thing on the outer end of the axle tube is a dirt shield, doesn't "seal" anything.
Not to hijack this thread, but I have a similar issue, but it is intermittent. On some starts mine will idle high (2,000+ RPM) and won't come down. If I shut it off and re-start it, it will then (most of the time) idle normally. ASD relay as well?
