thinking about getting an XJ again

I've owned my '93 XJ since 1999. It had 80k miles when I bought it and has about 170k miles now. It's been driven gently and well cared for and has been reasonably reliable. The biggest issue I have to deal with is rusted out floor boards, though the body itself is pretty solid. Find the best...

    XJ paint codes

I'm a longtime owner of a '93 XJ Cherokee "Country." I'm looking for a paint code chart or help with the codes I have. The car is a sort of turquoise with a pale gold trim. I think I saw it referred to once as teal and champagne. There are a bunch of 3-letter codes on the firewall plate in...

    Replacement engines

Looking at replacement 4-litre engines for my 2000 XJ. Two local shops have told me the "death rattle" in my engine requires a rebuild, but there appears to be no local machine shop in Anchorage to do the necessary machine work. Does anybody have anything good to say about S&J Engines, Titan...

    Input on replacement motor

I'm curious what you ended up doing? I've been looking at "remanufactured" engines but they don't get a lot of good reviews.

    Remanufactured 4 liter?

My 2000 4 liter XJ developed a death rattle several years ago and has been parked since. I've been trying to find someone to rebuild it for a couple of years, but according one local mechanic, competent machine shops are scarce in Anchorage. I've looked at ATK remanufactured engines on-line and...

High Zinc Motor Oil & Flat Tappets

I just found the relevant info on the Valvoline web site after failing to find it earlier. It seems a bit contradictory, saying it can be used in "modern muscle cars" but "not recommended for use in vehicles with cats." VALVOLINE'S statement: "VR1 Racing Engine Oil is recommended for engines...

High Zinc Motor Oil & Flat Tappets

I've been using Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil in my old British cars. Valvoline doesn't address the issue of potential damage to catalytic converters, but says VR1 is good for passenger cars as well as high performance cars. I have assumed that anything sold for highway use must be compatible with...

High Zinc Motor Oil & Flat Tappets

For years I've been using high zinc oil or a zinc additive in my old-technology British cars because the experts say the old flat tappet engines need the zinc to protect the cam & lifters. It occurs to me the 4 liter Jeep is pretty much old tech. Should I be using high zinc oil in my 4 liter XJ?

    Limited slip diff

What happens if friction modifier is not added to a limited slip diff? My '76 Dodge van developed a clunk from the rear end when the shop that serviced it failed to add the friction modifier. I added the friction modifier after about 3,000 or 4,000 miles and the clunk went away. My '93 XJ has...

    Floor Pan merchant

Who did you end up ordering from? It appears that Quadratec is the only one of these three suppliers that has one-piece floors for each side; the others have a front piece and a rear piece for each side. I also have a '93 XJ in Anchorage in need of floors.

Thanks for all the info. The t-case swap might have to wait until I finish the garage, but it doesn't sound like an impossible project. Ken

    New member, Select-trac question

Stoneattic, My '93 Cherokee was getting a little tired. I bought a Subaru last year to get AWD; hated it, sold it, bought a 2000 Cherokee. So all that has to be swapped is the transfer case itself? Not the front driveshaft or axle? I guess the next question is where you find the 242 tc...

    New member, Select-trac question

I just bought my second Command-trac Cheokee because I've never been able to find a Select-trac. What is required to convert besides the new transfer case? I thought I read someplace that the front axle was different, too. By the way, I asked one long distance seller if his Cherokee was...

    hitch capacity

The owner's manual for my 2000 concurs with the Class I / 2000 lb and Class III / 5000 lb limits. It also states that with a Class III hitch, the tongue weight must be at least 10% of the gross trailer weight but no more than 15%, and that an equalizing hitch is required for tongue weights above...
