My '88 XJ has a blown engine (big hole in oil pan, believe to be where #1 rod came out). It had 288k on it.
Im trying to decide if I should have it repaired (overhauled) or try for one of the used but warrantied engines I see advertised on the 'net.
Thoughts? Money is a concern but Im not...
My 88 Cherokee has a damaged engine. I wont go into details but I suspect that it has a #1 cylinder broken rod as there is a hole in the engine pan in that area. I've got the Jeep in "storage" and need to decide what I should do. I dont "need" the vehicle but do need to do something with it...
Shorty & JoePeters: Just got my new Standard Parts AUTOMATIC TPS installed in the 88 XJ with the 5 speed. Adjusted per the FSM (17%) and Cherokee idles like a champ. Took it out on the interstate and it seems to run fine.
What would happen if I plugged in the "extra 4 prong" plug to the XJ...
Shorty: I noticed your in Ocean View. I was stationed at Little Creek...a long time ago. Lived off base on 9th Bay on the beach and later on D View. The amusement park was still there.
I do think that machining the Renix XJ flywheels will cause the problem you first described. Being that there is no "freeplay" adjustment on these clutch assembly if you reduce the "thickness" of the flywheel you in essence increase the "freeplay.
This happened to me the last time I had a new...
Gee Fellows. Ive used Fram filters on my "88" XJ since I bought it new...in 1988. With 280K on it the thing runs like a top. I do mostly highway driving with it, never any offroad stuff.
I do notice that when I change the upside down filter alot of oil drains out of it BUT that may be due to...
I ordered a Standard Parts AT unit from Rock Auto. My thoughts are to install it, attach the 3 wire harness plug to the new AT TPS 3 wire connector, adjust the TPS and leave the connector for the Auto Trans dangle.
Ive thought maybe use the gound wire that goes from the TPS to the AT...
What should the Renix TPS ground resistance be? Mine, from the "B" terminal of the connector to the firewall ground, the battery post ground and engine block measures 1.5 ohms.
Checked the resistance of the wiring of the terminal "B" on my Renix TPS (manual).
I got 1.5 ohms.
Is that high/low?
I checked it from the connector to the firewall ground then to the battery post ground, then the engine block. All the resistance readings were the same 1.4-1.5 ohms.
Need a TPS for my 88 XJ with a Manual Trans. The local parts stores dont even carry them anymore (autozone, Oreallys) Rock Auto doesnt either.
Ideas? Napa Website says they do...for $139.
Dont know ifs a dealer item...gulp!
Havent checked the TPS.
As Joe mentioned I "think" I have a lazy IAC.
The reason is that its not just a idle flareup. Its a high idle for several minutes/miles and then suddenly the idle comes back to norm.
Its been getting progessively worse for a looong time (years).
How hard is it to...
Joe: Thanks. Yes its Idle issues and for the past year or so. Its been a runs fine for a while to a High idle at start up once in awhile and here lately nearly every time I start its High Idle time...untill I get down the road a couple miles.
Ive cleaned everything several times, over the...
Fellows: Im going to replace the ICA on my 88XJ 4.0l and looked at what Rock Auto has. They offer 3 brands of manufacture with prices ranging from $34 to $82.
What manufacturer do you all recomend or what to avoid?
Ive gone thru hours reviewing the topic of Renix High Idle at Startup and havent found anything that seems to fit the problem on my 88 XJ.
As the subject line states when I start up my XJ it revs up high (no tach to watch) for 8-10 seconds. Then it settles back to whatever the idle speed is...
Have a 88 XJ. The brake lights work fine during daylight. When I turn on the headlights/tail lights the left hand brake light does not come on when I push down the brake pedal. Right hand brake light comes on.
Any ideas?
The XJ does have a trailer wiring kit installed on the L/H side that...
