Will the starter turn the motor over or is the starter just spinning and the armature (sp) not engaging?

Don't even think nor listen to anyone who tells you to JB weld that area! Do it right, take it apart, bring it to a shop and get it fixed. Ya screwed up, suck it up, live and learn.

I have a 92 and a 2000 in the driveway and I just went out and moved them every which way and I can give an idea if the rig was in motion but you have me totally stumped on a T-case thats grinding while the vehicle is stationary.

What year is the XJ and what package does it have?

It totally sounds like either the fuel pump and or the ascender which are in the tank have crapped out on you. Both of which will quit suddenly without notice. When you click the key one notch, can you hear the fuel pump engaging? In the engine compartment, when you hit the valve on the fuel...

Does your shifter have a bit of play in it? If not, i'd get under the rigs and spray penetrating fluid all over the linkage and work it back and forth a bit. If this doesn't work your linkage is probably worn and will either need replacing or adjusting.

A far off shot but did you check the bearings in the rear end. It sounds like the same problem I had just before I lost one out of a "90 sport. Go for a drive and put your hand on the dif cover. If its warmer then usual..bingo. Hope that helps.

Did you check all of your fuses. Last week I had the same problem and it ended up being a fusethat I wouldn't think had anything to do with the problem. I'll bet on it.
