Your top five engines of all time?

OK, I was thinking about this in another thread, thought I'd get everyones opinion. What are the top five engines of all time? Here is the only caveat: The engine has to be from the "modern-era". For this purpose, we're going to call that 1950 and on (sorry 5-90, no obscure 1920's engines...

Can someone explain the operation of the 242?

Since its all snowy and cruddy outside, I'm actually finding the need for 4wd off the trail. I've only previously owned heeps with the 231 case, but now have the 242 case. How does the full time feature work? I'm familiar with the viscous coupling on the 249, but the 242 doesn't have that...

    Output of stock alternator

Who knows the output of the alternator on the Renix-era rigs? It seems to me that when I turn on the heater, lights or other accessories the voltmeter drops excessively (disclaimer: it is the stock gauge cluster voltmeter. I'm ordering a complete battery cable & grounds set from 5-90 because I...

What battery group size do you use?

I need a new battery, and was wondering whether or nor I should get a group 65 or stick with the standard group 54. The highest CCA rating I've seen on the group 54 batteries is around 550, while I can get much more out of a bigger battery. Are the benefits of a higher cranking amp battery...

    U-joints vs. CV joints

I posted this question in the "non-tech section" and it got moved to the "other tech" section, which might as well be a banishment :bawl:. I know someone on here knows the answer as it could apply to an XJ with the 242 transfer case as well: Got a '96 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2...

    Question about '96 Grand

Got a '96 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 in it for a good price. The owner tells me the VC in it has been replaced, but when I turn the wheel hard I can feel wheel hop like its in 4wd. I've been told that it could just be U-joints that cause that (apparently some ZJs came with CV joints up front)...

    Land Rover for the wife...

The old lady wants me to get her a used Land Rover. I've found several 2001 models (both Range Rovers and Discoverys) for around $10,000 (thats about the extent of my budget) with 80k or so miles. I know next to nothing about them, nor do I intend to drive anything other then my XJ...but what...

    NAXJA Sponsor that sells carpet?

    Would you buy this?

http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/932956912.html I'm not looking for another XJ, but always keep an eye open to craigslist. Seems like a shitty rig with a nice drive train. I have a clean bone stock 89 that I could swap the goodies into...

How to fix slow power locks?

When I hit the lock button on my 89, the drivers door lock only "locks" half-way and the other three doors seem to barely make it. Its like there just isn't enough power to lock the doors. I know its not a battery issue, so I'm wondering if there is a mechanism that needs to be lubed or what...

    Sound system advice.

I don't want to spend a lot of coin upgrading my stereo, so that means I want to stick with stuff I can buy at Wal-Mart. My goals: 1) get a deck that has a connection for Ipod, is satellite ready and has pre-outs for an amp. 2) upgrade speakers in rear to 6 x 9 and maybe 6 1/2" in front...

    2002 and newer 4.0's

Any of you guys know anything about the 2002-2006 4.0l engines that continued on in the wrangler? I'm assuming they used the individual coils on the plugs, but do they have head issues or anything else? I'm wondering if this swap could be worth looking at when my 89 takes a sheet.

    Walther PPS

I just bought one in the .40cal version (hate 9mm...). I've been waiting for them to actually hit the streets for about a year now, and I finally found one locally and snatched it up. I tried to convince myself to buy an XD, M&P, CZ and FNH, but nothing could compare IMO (although I really...

    Craigslist find: 88XJ for $150

http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/911361115.html Here is the link. I don't know anything about it, but can you go wrong for the price? I'd be happy to buy it for you West-Siders.

    Intermittent Wipers

Changed my intermittent wiper module and they still don't work. When I try and turn them on, they turn on once and then don't go again. Any ideas?

USA joins England as a second world country...

Yes, it's true. Now that we have an Obama administration, we can join England as a second world country. Not only do we no longer produce much of anything except food, but we will be on our way to socialism as well.

From 20.4mpg to 15.8mpg in one tank...

I got an interesting problem...I've averaged 20.4 mpg now for as long as I can remember (and before you ask, yes, I know how to properly calculate mpg:looney:). Two weeks ago I did two things to my daily driver that I think could have affected my mileage: 1) Went from 215 75R 15 tires to 235...

    Responses from the oil manufacturers.

The other oil thread is up to 22 pages, and I got sick of reading everyone's anecdotal evidence of what the "best" oil is. This morning, I took 3 hours and wrote every major engine oil manufacturer with the following: Hello, Recently, we at the NAXJA (North American XJ Association) have been...
