Head off, replace rings while exposed?

Ideally yes, but that's really a full rebuild. In an engine that is otherwise healthy it's perfectly reasonable to pull the pistons and rods, hone the bores, put in new rings and rod bearings, and drive on. Along with a valve job that's refreshing an engine rather than a rebuild, and people...

    Faulty Fan?

I'm curious, why would switching to an electric fan lead to overheating issues at highway speeds? It's not like the fan is actually doing anything to cool the engine at those speeds.

    Faulty Fan?

It's not the battery that would be an issue, it's the alternator, that's the device that actually generates the electricity for the Jeep. Personally I wouldn't worry about it at this point, however if you start noticing things like when you have your light bar on and the light dims when the...

    Carpet for 2 door XJ

Has anyone had any luck finding carpet for a 2 door XJ? After about a quarter century the carpet in my Cherokee is getting pretty tired and I'd love to replace it, but am not having much luck finding it. Can the 4 door carpet be used and trimmed to fit? Thanks!

    Hard shifting when hot-clutch dragging?

I'm afraid I don't come here all that often but when I do you guys seem to be the real experts. I've got a bone stock 96 Cherokee, 2wd, 4.0 5 speed, best car I've ever had, after 17 years and well over half a million miles I still love driving the thing. OK, my question. For a long time it's...

    stock XJ Fuel mileage '96-01

I've been driving my 96 4.0, 5 speed 2 wd for about 500,000 miles and mileage has always been pretty steady at 20 mpg, and I don't have a light foot. Yes, it's 2 wheel drive, but it's driven over something few Jeeps ever will... a half million miles of road!

    gauge cluster swap

Yep, pretty easy. I did the swap and before changing the sensors everything worked except the oil pressure and (temp?)... it's been a while. But the tach, voltage and low fuel light worked right away.

    noob with a 93 2wd cherokee!

Looks good, and with only 150K on it it's hardly broken in. Do yourself a favor, don't "ghetto" repair the floor, that kind of "repair" is a bad habit to get into, if you fix it right the first time you won't have to fix it again later. If welding in new metal isn't reasonable and the hole...

2 door vs 4 door seats

Is there a difference between the front seats in a 2 door and a 4 door XJ? Thanks!

I suspect the salesman didn't know what he was talking about.

    Seats!

Thanks, that helps. Does anyone have any idea if this will would work with the earlier seats and the later bases? http://www.jeepaholics.com/tech/mustangseats/mustangseats.htm (no I don't want to use Mustang seats!) The boneyard I've been going on has a couple of sets of nice looking gray...

    Seats!

The driver’s seat on my good old 96 Cherokee has about had it... maybe my 220+ lb. butt sitting on it for a decade and 350,000 miles might have had something to do with it! In any case the vinyl is torn and now the seat frame is breaking up. I went to the local pic a part today hoping to find...

    engine still good after fire?

For $80 I'd go for it. If the fire wasn't hot enough to start melting aluminum parts and the engine wasn't still running when someone shot a fire extinguisher at it chances are the engine itself is OK, those things aren’t THAT fragile.

    Clutch linkage problems - HELP!

One day last week I was driving along, went to put the clutch in and it was HARD, like a dead pedal, no give at all. I kept stabbing at it and it finally got past whatever was holding it and felt normal. Didn't last though, this happened two or three more times and then the plastic clip that...

    Side console cup holder?

My Cherokee didn't come with a console so I bought the right one from the dealer, and it came with one of those cup holders. The more recent kind that goes over the ebrake pretty much sucks, but it's a HUGE improvement over that sidemount one. Not only is it small but if you look at it wrong...

    Clutch Problems, PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Yes, the release cylinder is the same as the slave cylinder, it's just a more PC description.

XJ Seats the final answer FAQ

After 350,000 miles that won't do it, my seat is flat worn out (split, foam coming out, etc), I'd love to find covers so I can fix them. Jeff DeWitt

    Ignition switch/lock problem

Isn't the electrical start switch part of the ignition switch? If not where is it? I know the starter is OK, not only is it almost new but I ran a wire from it to up near the battery and can start the Jeep by turning the ignition on and touching the wire to the battery. Thanks! Jeff DeWitt

    Ignition switch/lock problem

My 96 XJ has something like 330k on it and the ignition switch and lock has never given any trouble until today. Got in the Jeep, turned the key and it felt like something went "crunch", and when it got to the start position nothing happend. The dash lights come on, and with a push I got it...
