Overheating - blown head gasket? HELP!

This IS the place to find out about what to fix when needed, how to diagnose it and even about fixing things on your Jeep, whether you know much about cars. Educating yourself about how things work so that when you take it to a shop, you don't get taken for a ride. Find at least two shops...

    Molar crank position sensor failed

I have a 5 year old AutoZone CPS. I guess it's been good to me. The NAPA one (Echelin) I replaced back then gave up the ghost after 6-7 months. Suggest using Cruiser's CPS hack/mod.

    Shift handle dismantle?

...and when pulling on the handle, give it some room. Don't have your face in the "line of fire" or you'll be nursing a shiner, at best.

    Alternator help

I put a NAPA re-man in my MJ 5 years ago. Still rolling along. I put a NAPA re-man in my wife's Camry...lasted 4 years, warranted, been going on 5 now. I put a NAPA re-man in my Nissan 1.8L commuter...failed after a year, warranted, 7 years ago. 50 miles a day, 5 days a week. Other than...

Why are my tires “scrubbing” in low speed turns?

75 on ice? Anyhoo, my sons XJ was scrubbing due to bad ball joints. If you take it to an alignment shop they'll be able to tell you...it's not a bad job with the right tools.

XJ battery strap from neg post to chassis?

I have the usual ground points (4 ga. battery to block, 4 ga. block to firewall) and added one battery to chassis and alternator to battery. When I did this things worked better all around.

    Automatic trans. seals?

Well, they're both round. One is thicker than the other, both latitude AND longitude wise. Of the two I got, even though one seemed to fit, it was about 3/32" larger on the inside and one was fatter. The parts guys at NAPA gave me the wrong one. That is why I recommended taking the old one to...

    Automatic trans. seals?

And make doubly sure it is the right seal. Take the old seal with you. NAPA sold me the completely wrong seal and it caused a monumental leak. Left me stranded.

    Transmission hard lines leak

So, when you get that kit, you can re-use the plastic clip OR use the new clip. Tear the old plastic clip off the end of the line with some pliers. Slide the new clip on the tube (oriented the same way) until it *clicks* over the shoulder on the tube. Then slide an o-ring on the tube, then...

    Transmission hard lines leak

The disconnect o-ring set up goes o-ring, spacer, o-ring. You should get new O-rings but keep that spacer. Otherwise, google up "Jeep transmission line connector". You should find the Crown o-ring set AND the plastic clip which will fix your leak for about $8.00 per connector A similar set-up...

    AW-4 Toasted???

First of all ATF+4 is a no no for the AW4, second, the AW4 takes 8 qts. OR If the transfer case was in Neutral, even if the transmission was in gear, you would get no power to the wheels. Your t-case linkage could have come loose in your trail riding. ...and then find a new mechanic.

Are you 62 or older? Have you National Parks Pass Yet?

My wife and I got ours (we got two) back in July. So far we've been to Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic and Redwood. Looking forward to road trip to Yellowstone, Teton and Glacier.

    AW4 Output Speed Sensor

Is the TCM (TCU) harness connector AND the TCM connector itself the same color? My truck (88) ran fine with a 94 AW4 TCM, until I checked the Renix TPS to adjust it, because I was having weird shifting problems. I got 0 signal at the TPS. So I pulled a junkyard TCM and it's matching engine...

    Just want stock height restored.

As said before...drop the money on a decent set of new springs. If you just want stock height, buy stock OEM springs. An add-a-leaf, especially a short 2" lift type will lose about half their arch fairly soon. They are not as expensive as you might think. XJ springs, even from the factory are...

is this a torque converter issue

Weird, although I have similar issues when driving from 1500 ft. up to 6-8000 ft. where we usually do all our adventuring. Did it on my 90 XJ as well as my 88 MJ. Gravel/rock road goes up 3,000 ft in 6 miles, then another 1500 in 2 miles going even slowerso it's a lot of pull at 25mph. Then...

    Battery opinions

I have a Wal-Mart battery I bought in 2008 for $95. I left the interior lights on a month or so ago. It faltered a little but started right up on the second try. I also have 4 aux lights, trailer lights, and everything works. If I leave it sitting for more than a week, I put it on the 2A...

is this a torque converter issue

Don't know why you (OP) think it'd be a Torque Converter. However, check the fluid and condition. If your level is low or bad, the TqC could be starving. Seems that would be consistent though. A bad torque converter might give you some screeching, grinding before it goes. My experience...

Neutral safety switch, replace or clean

If you haven't adjusted it, or the shift linkage lately, try that. If that's a no go. Take it off and clean it. It's probably gunked up from the factory grease. Be careful taking it off. Don't wank on it, slow pull/pry and wiggling with plenty of PB or similar. I pulled one off an XJ at the...
