How to press out this bearing?

I'm rebuilding my 231. There is a bearing that is pressed into a hole that can only be reached from the top of the hole. Here is a pic of what I'm talking about: It's not perfectly focused, but it's not accessible from the back side. The view you see in the pic is the only point of...

    Best ATF for NP231?

'91 xj with NP231. What's a high-quality ATF fluid for this? The '91 FSM says Dexron II or Mercon ATF, but that's obviously dated. I run Mobile 1 Extended Performance synthetic oil in the motor ... is there a similar-quality fluid for the TC? I'm rebuilding mine, and would like to run some...

Where are the date and "Bill of Materials" numbers on the D30?

Look for the "Date" and "Bill of Materials" stamps for the D30. I've cleaned it and wiped the long axle tube, but can't find it. The ratio tag has nothing that resembles a date on it. When you order parts, the Bill of Materials number is important. Anyone know where to find it?

    D30 Pinion preload ?

'91 XJ I'm changing the pinion seal on my '91 High-Pinion D30. The tag has the following numbers: 52068047 3.07 610318-5 The '91 Factory Service Manual says to first measure pinion bearing preload with an inch-pound torque wrench *before* removing the pinion nut. Then, when replacing...

D30 inner axles shaft oil seals ...

1991 XJ with D30 front diff. I've got my entire front end torn apart for steering & BJ replacement, and my diff opened up to drain the oil and replace the leaking pinion seal (breather was blocked). I'm going to replace the inner axle oil seals while it's opened up. Can someone tell me the...

    Axle tube seals for D-30?

'91 XJ with D-30 front axle. I'm replacing the ball joints, axle seals, pinion seal, axle u-joints, tie rods, track bar, etc. I'm thiniking of using ten-factory axle tube seals like these: https://www.tenfactory.com/axle-product/3251-axle-dust-shield-mg21102/ I've heard conflicting stories...

What size socket for NP231 drain & fill bolts?

'91 XJ with NP231-J Tcase. None of my sockets or wrenches fit the drain/fill bolts on the NP231, so I'm going to go and get a socket. What size is it? All I know is that 27 is too small, and 36 is too large LOL. Thanks.

    Shocks for 2" lift?

'91 XJ Can anyone recommend some shocks for a 2" lift? Right now I'm running Monroe Gas Magnums severe duty, but they are for an unlifted XJ, and I'm concerned they might not be "tall" enough when fully extended -- might not allow enough travel. I want a beefy, durable shock ... with a...

lift height vs. track bar length?

Hey folks: '91 XJ 4WD. I put some heavier springs on the front and rear, and the front is now lifted 2.25". I measured it by the "official" method ... from the top of the axle tube to the bottom of the "Frame" rail. I'm running LT235-75-15 tires. Before lifting, the driving was very...

    My new impact wrench

Hey Folks: I'm 53 years old, and never owned an impact wrench. I finally got one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007WQQ90A/ I got it as an open-box item for $106. I also got a full set of chrome molybdenum (not chrome vanadium) sockets. I'm amazed at how much easier it is to get...

    Valve cover gasket recommendations

I need to replace the valve cover gasket on my '91 4.0. Any recommendations? Is the FEL-PRO VS50522T PermaDryPlus worth the extra money? Does it really stay leak-free longer? Thanks.

Prepping new steel for welding and painting ...

Hi guys ... I don't know much about painting, so I thought I'd ask NAXJA: New steel usually comes with a gray coating, which I guess is there to prevent rust. Not sure what it is, but should it be painted? Or should I strip it off before painting? If it needs to be stripped, how do you do...

How do I become an official NAXJA Vendor?

Hi Folks: Who do I talk to about becoming a NAXJA Vendor? I'm thinking of offering alternator & starter rebuild kits, 1-gauge cables, Alternator links, etc. I've been a business owner for more than 20 years, and Jeeps have been my hobby ... might as well turn that into a business opportunity...

    Upgraded Engine Ground Strap

About 11 years ago, I upgraded my ground strap with 1 gauge welder's wire. It was the most flexible welder's wire I could find, but not anywhere near as flexible as the little OEM strap, so it eventually broke at the engine head lug because of engine movement. To replace it, I used a woven...

    Starter Motor Bearing Size?

'91 XJ, 4.0L Motor. Mitsubishi Starter. Anybody know the size of the roller bearing inside the starter motor? The brushes in my unit have worn out, and I'm going to do a thorough rebuild. I believe there is only one roller bearing in the starter ... plus several bushings. I'd like to order...

    NP231 rebuild/upgrade recommendations

Time to rebuild my '91 NP231-J (with the long tailhousing). I need recommendations for the following: - Does my version have the 16mm or 24mm input bearing? I think it's the 24, but not sure. - A good rebuild kit with high-quality Japanese or US bearings. No Chinese crap. - A Heavy-duty...

    Lift advice ...

Hi folks. I upgraded all of my springs to up-country, but the front is riding almost 1 inch higher than the rear -- not pretty. I guess it's because the springs are not the same brand. I'm still using the stock rear shackles. Would swapping out to a longer shackle be a good way to get some...

Denso Alternator slip ring (comutator) replacement?

'91 XJ, 4.0L HO motor. I pulled my Denso Alternator to replace the brushes, and I noticed the slip ring (comutator) is getting pretty worn. It will have to be replaced in the next few years. Has anybody ever done that on the denso? It seemed to have a solid metal end on the shaft ... I...

    modified hood release cable?

Hi Folks: A few years ago, I replaced my hood release cable with a new one from Team Cherokee. I lubed it with special cable lube, and lubed ALL of the moving parts that open the hood, but it never was very good or smooth feeling. Now I can barely open the hood ... I have to give it a...
