Is this bad? I had the airbox out today and noticed this underneath.

I've had a problem for a while that I would sometimes have smoke rolling out from under my jeep when going up longer climbs (anything classified as a "grade" here in SoCal). I assumed it was the tranny overheating, so I added a cooler and had it completely flushed. But the smoke keeps coming...
My friend busted his u-joint and yoke on his rear dana 44 tonight. I have a spare d30 yoke that I know uses the same size u-joint, and I remember from setting my gears up that the pinion nut is the same size. Is there any possibility that they are the same? Is the spline count and diameter...
Do I have to drain my oil to change the o-ring in the filter housing or is the level below that and won't drown me if I take the filter off?
thanks
Marcus
My 99 with 67,000 has a stumble at idle. It's bad enough that when the car is idleing in drive without the brakes on it will surge a little. It's worse in the heat and worse when the A/C is on in the heat. I keep getting CHECK ENGINE lights, but it is brief and is gone by the time I check the...
If there is play in the slip spline of the front driveshaft, is that something that can be fixed, or does the whole shaft need to be replaced? I've already replaced everything else on it, and there is definitely play at that slip joint.
Marcus
On the double cardan end of the shaft, how do you get the centering ball out of the little yoke to get the new one in? I've searched but can't find any info about that. Thanks
Marcus
Just wanted to tell you guys some of the strange jeeps I've seen here in china in the last two months. Of course I've seen the cherokees with the high roofs, and long wheelbases, as well as the ones with the WJ looking front end. There are many of the CJ looking jeeps here in every...
Well the other tread was closed, and the moderators put a note on saying it wasn't cool for me to ask people to do a PM campaign. I'd say its cooler than loosing $300 that you will never see again, but whatever...
Well, I just rechecked my paypal account and a refund just popped up on it...
Quick question for you guys: When my jeep is idling it does this weird stumble/stutter thing every now and then. It happens extremely fast and only every 10-15 seconds. It happens so fast that the tach doesn't detect any drop in idle speed, nor do my senses. It just stumbles as if something...
So ya, it looks like the filler (and oil level) is pretty close to the bottom of the pinion housing and I was just wondering if anyone has tried to change the pinion seal without draining the diff. I'm cheap and I just put in $6 worth of fluid and don't want to drain it if I don't have to (or...
So I've read around the internet and here about how to break gears in (drive 20 minutes let cool...etc.), but my question is about what type of oil to use... if it matters at all. I know that with engines its best to use dino-oil for the first 3,000 or so, is there anything similar with gears...
I have a 99 and I need to tap on of the wire hooked up to headlight switch for some switches I'm installing. Are the Orange wires the ones that illuminate buttons and switches in the dash?
Marcus
Well, I got my rear end in this evening. After I set the gears up and got a good pattern, I pressed the final bearings on and put it all together. I checked the pattern a few more times just to be safe and it seemed the more I played with it, the more my backlash tightened up. I decided it...
The 44 I'm working on has a strange all-rubber seal just outside the carrier bearings. They are almost like a donut of gasket maker. Anyways, I need to replace them since they are both torn. Is it a common piece? All the auto parts stores are closed today so I didn't have a chance to ask...
Ummm, I had an accident and dropped my pinion pretty hard. Unfortunately, the front edge of one of the teeth landed right on the metal axle and it dented it a little (the tooth). Basically it is bent a tiny bit to the coast side, not the drive side of the tooth, at the very front, by the face...
I put my new gears in and was worried because my jeep developed a rumble vibration coming from the front at 70 mph. The more I thought about it though, the less it seemed like something caused by the gears. I realized that while the driveshaft hasn't changed and there wasn't any vibrations...
As I was putting my dana 30 back together last night, I didn't put the giant washer looking thing that presses in with the pinion depth shims back in. I measured its thickness and replaced it with the same thickness of shims. Looking back, it seems like it is some kind of splash shield or...
My brake booster is right in the way of me running a shock through the fender, anyone ever move it? I have read about other types of cars that relocate it and use a cantilever system for a linkage... anyone ever thought of this or have any ideas? Just something I'm kicking around and might do...
