I still "officially" own a '99 XJ until tomorrow :-)
I've been a member here since '05 !
You also lost some bronco earmuffs out of the car and the bathroom timer. It has been working wonders for us!
I like the idea of Hell's Revenge on Fri. A.M. as has been suggested in this thread...perhaps...
I'm He-Man ,apparently, and I snapped mine at the base of the handle.
Does anyone have a replacement cable or whole handle assembly they don't need?
I'm located in Loveland but will drive...
Did you follow the FSM procedures, bolt tightening sequence, and bolt torque specs using a torque wrench when you installed the head?
yes, yes and yes
Did you use new head bolts???
yes
update:
I took it to the local mechanic for a more thorough diagnosis. I had him double check the fuel pressure. It checked out good.
compression / leakdown tests are not good.
cyl 1-90
cyl 2-65
cyl 3-45
my mechanic seems to believe that the rings got roasted when it overheated initially, but...
this afternoon got a P0302 code- misfire in cylinder #2
thoughts?

1.vacum
2. fuel pressure
3.plugs/cap/wires
4. injectors
It has new cap/wires/rotor/plugs, new fuel pump, I've checked for vacuum leaks....
how do I test injectors?
I didn't get the valves checked. They passed my visual inspection....i.e. not roasted and no holes in them.
This a.m. we did a cap/plugs/rotor/wires. That smoothed up the idle some.
We cleaned the idle control valve.....
We replaced the upstream 02 sensor, because after a visual comparison...
Here's the story.
Brother in-law inherited a 99 xj from his dad.
Dad had driven the jeep for 40 miles with the check engine light on. Then had it towed to the dealership the next day.
It was taken into the stealership. They diagnosed blown head gasket, cracked intake manifold, and low fuel...
Well, the throttle body only has 2 cables attached to it. I know for sure one connects to the accelerator pedal....
the other (broken one) seems to snake behind the engine and down towards the auto-tranny.
There is no cruise control cable like on my 99 manual tranny xj.
info:
2000 xj with auto
So, with my precise wrenching technique when doing a head gasket job I accidentally snapped the plastic fitting on the end of this cable at the throttle body. Is there a way to replace this tiny plastic piece without having to replace the whole friggin cable??
I have the Factory Service Manual.
I have ordered:
1 Fel-pro gasket kit
1 set of head bolts
1 ex/in manifold gasket
1 exhaust/intake bolts
What else do you suggest?
Are there any tips/tricks on this procedure that I should be aware of that will save me hours of cussing and busted knuckles?
