Well news update - finally gave up and took it to the shop. They told me my brand-new NAPA fan clutch was bad! Problem solved. No telling how long it would have taken me to figure THAT one out........just glad it's running well now! Sure appreciate all the great help here.
Hey all - thanks for the great ideas. Max, good thoughts on the efan - let me confirm that mine is working properly, though it was the last time I checked. I did regear to 4.88s for the 35s, and I understand that's more work for the motor, but something else is going on for sure. No idea on...
I've still got the NAPA order in my email, it was NAPA 42004 - says "reverse" under rotation. But since I have no idea what else it could be, maybe either my new water pump or new fan clutch is bad. I did buy a fan clutch for a Grand Cherokee but I just couldn't stand how loud it...
I bought the kit with the blue liquid and it sure seemed to stay the same color. During the compression test I forgot to wedge the throttle open and everything was already between 150-120, so numbers probably would have been even higher.
So it's been a while since I put the new water pump in...
Hey all - I have a lengthy thread on CF.com about this but it seems to have run its course and a cross-post can't hurt.
95 4.0 5-speed on 35s/4.88s with a motor from a 97; it idles fine but temp likes to live just to the right of 210, but when I'm at 50MPH or faster, it gets up to 230-235 or...
I do believe the PO recently put in chromoly shafts, not sure about joints, but I'll check on that for sure. Definitely considering West Texas Offroad's hydro boost! I'm pretty sure the steering box is 293k worth of original, so getting a rebuilt unit from them would be a great start, not to...
Haha good advice, Evan - opinions are like buttholes, EVERYBODY'S GOT ONE. And here on the internet, opinions aren't always grounded in experience :) I hadn't thought about locking one hub - pretty sharp. That would basically keep one wheel locked and the other one would be open - so if it's...
Hey all - I'm getting a HP44 from a guy who's been running it in an XJ. It's out of a 79 F250 and it's got manual locking hubs. Is it worth the expense to put a locker in instead, or leave it the way it is? I am getting it regeared to 4.88, so if I do a locker, the time would be now. I do...
Thanks, brother - I'm about to update this thread with some pics and all the things I've done to her. I took this thread at face value and started upgrading - way back in May! It's been a wild ride (and never will be done) but I've done a ton to her and really had fun along the way.
Will...
Not a bad question - this is my first XJ and I just got it, and unfortunately I'm finding that POs cut a LOT of corners wherever they could. It's got a ton of miles but it's really in good shape, so I'm wanting to build it ONCE and do it right. 8.25 is a lot better than the d35 but it's stock...
Hey all - the guy that's regearing an 8.8 for me is also going to weld on the new spring perches and shock mounts. He says all he needs to know where to put them is the old 8.25, so my plan was to pull it out of the XJ and bring both rears to him.
BUT
The XJ's been lifted 6.5", now has an...
There's some good advice! Think I'll do exactly that. Still thinking about tapping the others bigger - this crossmember has a lot of weight on it and I'm really not thrilled with how this looks right now...
Alright, have a look at this:
Sorry it's such a crap pic - it is SUPER AWKWARD in there, but at least I can see somewhat thanks to a GAPING HOLE in what's left of the floorboard.
SO - what it looks like to me is that the nutsert is still there, and maybe someone already had trouble with it...
OK I FOUND IT!!!! Popped off the access and there it is. Now my problem is I CANNOT seem to find a socket the right size to turn it - anybody have any idea what size the nutsert might be??? Bolt head is 17mm....thank you!!!!
Haha, ok - I was wondering which knuckle you could possibly be talking about. I'm going to leave this to a professional - if three can't hold it the 3/4 of a mile to the body shop then I should just set her on fire!
