AW4 stuck in 1st gear when cold

Well after all that it turns out it was the TPS which was the first thing I changed. The new one I put in was faulty too. :( I swapped it over and the transmission now shifts smoothly into second when cold. I still have an issue with a lack of power/acceleration in other gears when cold, but...

AW4 stuck in 1st gear when cold

I swapped the TCM over but still have the same problem. The oil level was right on the Full mark when hot but I checked it this morning when cold (engine not running) and it was higher up the dipstick above the full mark so now I'm confused. I've removed about half a litre of transmission oil...

AW4 stuck in 1st gear when cold

I've been running 4.10 ratios with 31" tyres for a few years now with no issues. I rechecked the oil level and it''s not too high. Adjusted the kickdown cable and that made no difference either so I pulled the TCM fuse and it manually shifted through the gears fine, this was still while cold. I...

AW4 stuck in 1st gear when cold

It's a 96 XJ. I have a spare TCM but I haven't swapped it over yet. Should that be my next step?

AW4 stuck in 1st gear when cold

It's done 220 miles. I haven't flushed it but I just changed the filter and trans oil. I've also adjusted the kickdown cable.

AW4 stuck in 1st gear when cold

Every morning when my XJ is cold (or on an afternoon after it's been sitting all day) it won't shift out of 1st gear until I've driven it for half a mile or so and it has warmed up. It revs upward of 4,000 rpm but eventually I can trick it into changing into 2nd gear by backing off the pedal a...

    Swapped flexplate, now won't start

No worries Tim, there seems to be a lot of uncertainty about this. I received an email back from a well-known supplier of Jeep parts today that states the 91-95 and 96-01 flexplates "are not interchangeable, they are different". Someone forgot to tell this to my XJ because it's running fine now...

    Swapped flexplate, now won't start

Thanks for all the replies. I changed the Crank Angle Sensor over and it started straight up. I'm going out to celebrate now that I have saved myself a lot of work swapping the flexplate over again. So there you go...the 91-99 flexplates do appear to be the same. :)

    Swapped flexplate, now won't start

Thanks for that. Does anyone know what the difference is? I assume it's only the square cut outs for the crank angle sensor. Are flexplates listed under a different name because I cant find them on www.rockauto.com?

    Swapped flexplate, now won't start

Hi, I pulled the flexplate out of my 96 XJ (OBDII) today and it was badly cracked around the bolts so I grabbed a spare flexplate and spent the day putting it all back together again. When I went to start it up it turns over but won't start, so I thought maybe I somehow damaged the crank angle...

    RPM's jumping around

Thanks. It looks like it could have been the brake pedal switch that needed adjusting. Must have been confusing the Transmission computer into thinking I was braking.

    RPM's jumping around

    :) I have a Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L 1996 model.

    RPM's jumping around

Any idea what could cause my RPM's to start jumping around sometimes when I'm driving along? I've replaced the TPS and tried swapping a few sensors over (02 sensor, camshaft sensor, coil etc) but it made no difference. I adjusted the throttle valve cable and tested the transmission solenoids...

    P0171 Driving me Insane!!!

It's too dark to go out and take a picture right now but looking at the Jeep from the front it's in the right hand back corner of the engine bay, just before the firewall and bolted onto the side panel. I'll try and rephrase my last post then...it was seizing up when it gets too hot. Is that...

    P0171 Driving me Insane!!!

Maybe! ;) The first thing he did was check the fuel trim on petrol and confirmed it was normal. Then during (or after) the Dyno run on LPG "the stepper motor operation began to run abnormal paths". He pulled the LPG converter apart and replaced the damaged diaphragm. He then found a loose...
