thinking about getting an XJ again

Enthusiasm & determination will always carry you thru' &, with a supportive family, you can't go wrong. The parts issue is a peculiarly American "problem" which I can only assume comes from being spoiled all these years. I'm still amazed at what is still readily available. Here XJ's weren't...

Brake failure light randomly coming on

AFAIK, that light is only connected to the parking brake switch & the float in the MC reservoir, so only comes on if the PB is on - or the level is low. Of course if the switch is stuck, or the float is punctured that will cause it.

96 XJ, 16” Jeep Icon Rims& Wheel Spacers

"hub-centric" was the term that evaded me when composing my earlier post but that, to me, means ones with a centre bore which is a snug fit on the raised hub centre. Of course the 3mm & 5mm ones we are still allowed to use are really no more than shims, for where there are minor clearance...

    Quiet stainless steel exhaust?

I can remember when 6 years would've been considered exceptional, but we move on & things change, to the point where afaik my XJ's all have their original exhausts (except the one which has had the cat surgically removed). 6 years from something that price is simply unacceptable - & there was...

    The Infamous Oil Filter Adapter

Ahhhh, now I see where you're coming from. Too bad the hex on my torx bits is nothing like 12mm - 9 maybe, but anyway, a size I've sever found any wrench fits.

Update in 12 months (weeks?) please.

96 XJ, 16” Jeep Icon Rims& Wheel Spacers

Same thing, different dimensions &, I suppose, for a different purpose &, of course their thickness (3mm ones are also available) means, almost by definition, they must be like the one illustrated. Seeing that picture reminded me of a variation which was probably why they had such a bad press...

    The Infamous Oil Filter Adapter

They have their uses, especially in 3/8" drive, steering box plumbing comes to mind, but not for Torx heads.

96 XJ, 16” Jeep Icon Rims& Wheel Spacers

Well that'll teach me to try and be helpful. Personally, I would advocate avoiding spacers if at all possible, as they have, generally, been considered "a bad thing" almost from the moment they appeared on the market (premature bearing wear being the usual reason given). In fact, I think...

XJ coolant overflow after engine is shut off

    (1) a function of anti-freeze is to raise the boiling point of the coolant above 212* (2) temperature of coolant increases when the engine is turned off, because there is no airflow thru' the rad. (which is why some electric fans are designed to continue running after the car stops, indeed some...

    Electrical issue

Yes, because all those functions are "key on" & that's their supply wire.

    Radiator/water pump hose clamp sizes

Unlike other clamp types, I don't think they do. A careful examination of the old one(s) should reveal the size.

96 XJ, 16” Jeep Icon Rims& Wheel Spacers

Since I raised the issue of late model hubs/rotors, here is the relevant part of my source of info: an earlier post right her on this forum:- " . . . 2) Older type unit hubs ( Jeep Part number 53007449 ) used 1990 through 1999.5 ( Use Composite brake rotors). 3) New type unit hubs ( Jeep Part...

    problem removing transmission pan

& that is the problem, at least for those who don't know any better.

96 XJ, 16” Jeep Icon Rims& Wheel Spacers

ZJ rear studs are longer - but how they compare with XJ fronts I have no idea. The late models with 16" wheels do have longer front studs because in mid-'99 XJ's got cast rotors, which have slightly thicker centres than the earlier composite ones. It's the owners of those that may have to be...
