    Knocking only when accelerating

    Are you sure the knock is coming from the engine compartment? If u-joints are getting sloppy, they will make a knocking sound when accelerating. It will help to try to identify the location of the knock and if you can feel any vibration along with the knocking sound.

    Question about cleaning out this neutral safety switch

    If the back-up lights work right now, just take a scribe and mark the switch and the trans case or scribe around the mounting bolt. Put the switch back right where it is now.

    I need the window/lock switch for the front passenger door if you decide to take the doors apart.

    would you buy a mint 98 classic with 1500?

    I think a mint body and interior is worth the $1500. Motors are plentiful and cheap. In my area, it's rust that kills XJ's. I'd buy it.
