I'm not sure what to tell you . I have 3 MJs , 2 have 231s and one has a 242 . The 2 autos have the same driveshafts and the two different tcase. The manual 231 MJ has a shorter front shaft , which may fix your problem.
And you can use the 97 and newer heater hoses and lose the heater valve ,or use the same 97+ hoses and cut them to accept the heater valve if you wish to keep it
Just get some 1/2 inch heater hose and spray some wd40 ( or equivalent) on the tee side , it will slide right on .... Done this for years without a single problem.

Get yourself some tamper proof screws . More than likely it won't happen again but you'll have a little more of a defense against someone stealing your plates .
It's all because the insurance jobs are the money makers and the 85 XJ won't net them much money . There should be some shop around there that would do it , but I'm not from your area ....

Fluid film will save it to a point , but staying away from the salt and or brine is best . Buy a cheap throw away vehicle and drive that in the winter (if you can ).
