186,000 miles too high on XJ to purchase?

1996 XJ Sport. Price is good. Seller has maintenance records. Everything works, no leaks, no dents, minor scratches on paint. How many miles will engine, trannie take without major rebuild? Thanks for any info.

Crown Vic disc brakes in my XJ

Seems like I read about someone doing just that. Hard to beat these boards for info that can save hours and hours of time spent otherwise.

Crown Vic disc brakes in my XJ

Mine's a '95, C-clip Dana 35. The bolt pattern on the axle flange is slightly different - on the Crown Vic (and D44) the pattern is a perfect rectangle. On mine the top bolt holes match the Crown Vic, and the bottom two are spread slightly further apart. No biggie, just a little drilling and...

Crown Vic disc brakes in my XJ

Mike, I used stock rims, no problem whatsoever with clearance. Did need longer lug bolts considering the added thickness of the rotors versus brake drums. I've read that others used the stock lugs, but I just thought mine were too short. They were only a buck or so apiece. If you replace the...

No Check Engine Light = No Pass Smog!

Really. What about the radon rays those little bulbs put out? I heard they were toxic to the endangered mosquito-sniffing grape bat. Think about every time those "certified" XJ's fire up and flash that light! ;) On the other hand, from what state did the phrase "idiot light" come?

Crown Vic disc brakes in my XJ

Just put Lincoln Towncar ('94) on my '95 XJ. Rear discs. I have the Dana 35 rear diff. The bolt pattern is "close" (requires some drilling in either the backing bracket or the differential plate. I understand it would be a straight bolt on for a Dana 44. When I was at the junkyard, I looked...

    SHO fan.. vertical vs. horizontal?

may depend on whether you want to retain your stock a/c fan. I did, so I mounted my Taurus fan vertical. The other benefit of vertical is that you can mount the trannie cooler on the backside of the bumper, and the fan pulls air through the trannie cooler also. See GoJeep.com for pics.

Another overheating issue but a little different

Try to look at the parts as maintenance/wear items. Some of them were probably about due to be replaced anyway. Still cheaper than a car payment ;). Weird how you can climb some hills, then have the sudden spike. But it does sound like a cumulative thing in which the system eventually...

Tranny line and gauge question...Yes I already searched

Hey, just unhook'em both, put lengths of 3/8" hose on them with the other ends in a bucket and tick the starter a time or two. You'll quickly find out which is pushing and which is sucking. This is an easy way to flush'em with new fluid also. Drain off two quarts, add 2. drain 2, add 2 until...

    Notes on Taurus fan intall...

I am in the Phoenix area. I actually bought this one off of ebay, but there are a million Taurus's in the UPullit off of Chandler BLVD and 56th street in Chandler. Wednesdays are half price parts :))

    Notes on Taurus fan intall...

Most definitely no regrets. I'm guessing that my old mechanical fan clutch has been kaput for some time... No more of the temp guage creeping up at idle at stoplights. Low fan speed seems to take care of most city cooling needs. Heading out on a fishing trip today. Have a long slow ascent...

    Knuckle choice for my '90

For my ZJ rear discs, there are clips that go over the ears to smooth out any roughness and improve the slide. You might also look into whether you can find these for you fronts. Raybestos made them - came in a little "brake hardware" kit with boots for the slide pins and the clips that go...

    Notes on Taurus fan intall...

'95 XJ Fan clutch was shot, so it was decision time - replace fan clutch or finally upgrade to electric fan. Decided to upgrade. Live in AZ - need super cooling in summer. Thanks to GoJeep and NAXJA members for inspiration and valuable info. *Mechanical fan and shroud came out. Replaced...

    Help with my Brakes

Based on all of the other guys that can lock their brakes up with your exact setup, my best guess is air in your system. Glazed pads could decrease performance, but just don't have the stopping power that others do with the same setup. The cheapest 1st step would be to carefully follow the...

New D35C axle bearings and seals in. Now 1 axle won't go.

Well, it's fixed. The Napa bearing had an ID that was too small. Wouldn't fit over the axle. Had I checked that first.... Bearing from the stealer fit like a champ - $40. $10 at Napa, but only 1 of 2 fit. Must be one of those "you get what you pay for" deals. Never had a problem at Napa...
