98 XJ 6 cylinder sudden No Start -- strange symptoms

Tim, I just went and pulled the connector modules from the Computer as has been suggested to "maybe reset it" .. no joy. I am very familiar with that CPS where the problem is apparently sometimes the actual sensor and sometimes the connection into the wiring harness. As I understand it Jeep...

98 XJ 6 cylinder sudden No Start -- strange symptoms

Tim, This vehicle actually belongs to a good friend; is driven by one of his family members (when it works, huh?). He has been out of town; should return the middle to end of this week. So I've been trying to help out. Work on it now will probably have to wait until he returns -- then I'll...

98 XJ 6 cylinder sudden No Start -- strange symptoms

Please let me demonstrate my ignorance here. That sounds like a great idea -- couldn't hurt and doesn't even cost anything to try. And if those connections (or the computer itself) are bad or failing would this possibly explain why the ODB-II reader that has worked on this vehicle before now...

98 XJ 6 cylinder sudden No Start -- strange symptoms

Actually just replaced the Crank Position Sensor (and a lot of other stuff) on another XJ last week -- where the problem eventually turned out to be the fuel pump return. But isn't the fuel pump supposed to generate initial pressure the moment the key goes to the "run" position regardless of...

98 XJ 6 cylinder sudden No Start -- strange symptoms

98 XJ had been running great; recent tuneup; over-maintained. Suddenly won't start: 1) Starter cranks well; great battery; motor turns freely 2) No spark (tested at coil output) 3) No fuel pressure (no pump running); also tested at fuel rail & no pressure 4) No "check engine light" 5)...

How can I remove self-installed steering column security collar device?? with photos

Perfectly stated -- and I've seen stats that show most vehicles are stolen this way. No way to stop a determined pro -- heck, you can even put a small winch/lift on any pickup to quickly (albeit temporarily) turn it into a 'tow truck' and be gone.

How can I remove self-installed steering column security collar device?? with photos

5-90, Come to think about it -- and it was years and years ago -- it was screws with heads that broke off! I'll be darned if you haven't jogged long forgotten memories!! I might very well be wrong, but I still think the biggest problem is not the screws but the actual metal ring...

How can I remove self-installed steering column security collar device?? with photos

That sort of thing is not uncommon at all. The screws were installed with a special tool. They are designed similar to those found on some restroom stalls -- that allow them to be tightened with a special tool but not to be loosened. I don't think these are my main problem though. They can...

How can I remove self-installed steering column security collar device?? with photos

In a recent post on another topic I mentioned that my 90 XJ (and my 82 CJ8) have 'security collars' on their steering columns meant to discourage theft and was asked to describe them. Their entire purpose was to keep some jerk with a screwdriver from being able to 'pop' the ignition by breaking...

90 Cherokee Power Brake Booster vac leak

OK -- I appreciate and shall take the consistant advice. I do know how to bleed brakes and used to be a 'mechanic' long before mechanics became 'technicians'. Its just that some physical issues cause me problems when trying to get down under the dash. But I do have a friend -- which is always...

90 Cherokee Power Brake Booster vac leak

My 90 Cherokee has suddenly began developing what appears to be a vacuum leak in the booster module. Can hear it mostly from inside the vehicle, but also with an ear close to the module. Happens when the peddle is pressed during braking; only after some force is applied and stops when...

    90 voltage gauge problem

Thanks for the info. Unless something changes I think I'll take the advice to just look for major changes in the reading -- and monitor the performace mostly by watching the battery itself. At least for a while ... Mike

    90 voltage gauge problem

I have a 90 Cherokee Laredo. One owner -- stock -- 43,000 miles. Almost new battery and the alternator was replaced with NAPA's best aprox. 6 months ago. Everything seems to be working fine except the in-dash voltmeter. Readings taken across the battery terminals (with multiple meters just...
