Thanks. In this case I know its the wiring because I opened up the cable and it had 4 wires broken. Two were hanging by the insulation and probably were making contact most of the time. Two more were separated entirely. The new motor and wiring splices are working well so far.

Finally got tired of the speedo being flaky and rolled the dice. Changed the VSS and it fixed it. Still don't know why cold affected it - but it did. The VSS has holes so that it fills with tranny fluid. Maybe it had to be thinned out before it would work right.
