I had similar symptoms with my XJ, but since it was OBDII, I found out rather quickly that is was the TPS.
Yours being OBDI, you might want to check the TPS. I don't know if the check engine light would illuminate on your year for a TPS problem.
In defense of carnuck, the '86 Comanche probably didn't have too many components that were susceptible to the high alcohol content of E85.
But yes, today's vehicles have plastics everywhere.
In school: converted a Chevy Malibu and Silverado to E85. I miss those SAE days.

I'm on my fourth XJ now; first three were 4WD but my current one is 2WD w/ LSD. I have never gotten stuck, even with 6" of snow and un-plowed roads (Chicago, IL).
LSD, weight, and smarts can do the job.
Isn't there 10% ethanol in the 87 grade?
Because there is only two tanks under ground; the 87 and 93 grade, the 89 is a mix of the two.
All the stations in my area has a sticker stating 10% ethanol all grades.
