I've been dealing with mystery oil leaks for the past 3 years. After replacing all the seals and gaskets that everyone else has, I finally replaced the head gasket a few weekends ago. Pain in the A*@ but it seems to have taken care of the problem. The right side of my engine was always wet...
So I'm replacing my head gasket tonight and I get the head off and look at the old gasket and new gasket. They match up just fine. However, neither of them match up with the coolant ports on the head or the block. Both gaskets have a few small circles that match up with some of the coolant...
Check your U-joints too. Grab hold of each one and if they wiggle at all the needle berrings are probably going and you'll need to replace the U-joints. If they're solid then do the other stuff. It could be a combination??
I have problems with mine too. Sometimes it reads very irradic temps like -37 deg F. and then seems fine. My compass is screwed too, always says "cal" like it's brand new and has to get it's berrings. Unfortunately, I have no idea where the temp sensor is either, but I would love to know too...
Is it possible to remove the head to replace the head gasket without removing the intake and exhaust manifolds? Those bolts are a real pain in the knuckles to get at...
I know this is an older post, but I've been out of town for the holidays and just saw it. It seems like this is a pretty common problem and I've had the exact same thing with my '88 and now my '90 so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I have the exact same problem with my '90 and had the same thing with my '88 before I sold it. I have the same feeling that the fins are plugged or something. Also, I get much hotter air when I use the bi-lev setting in the AC section...doesn't make much sense to me but I'd be interested to...
Alright I've been leaking oil since I bought the thing. I have a 90 xj with the 4.0. At first it was just a little drip when I would shut off the engine, so I replaced the rear main seal. Then it got worse. Long story short I've replaced the rear main twice and dropped the oil pan even more...
I'm on my second XJ, first an 88 now a 90 and have had heat problems with both. Seems to be getting good flow through the heater core but the air is cool. It gets hot only when I put it on bi-level and then it's only hot comming out of the vents, the floor is still cool. Sorry I can't help...
I've had the same problem in my '90. But really only when going uphill or when I get on the gas, so basically only when I need it right? Anyway, I found that I had a bad U-joint. All the needle bearings under one of the caps were gone, maybe went to needle bearing heaven, anyway I replaced...
I did a search and found a lot of threads about thermostats etc., but not any quite like this. The temp on my '90 xj is constantly up and down. It seems like the thermo keeps opening and closing. It will get up to 210 or so then drop to about 130 and back and forth constantly. This is the...
Thanks for all the responses. It turns out my 55mph shimmy was the result of a broken front right u-joint. I found a very detailed step by step from ChiXJeff from a couple months ago so that should help. Any thoughts on installing locking hubs? Has anyone done it on a cherokee? Was it worth...
