I've never figured out what caused the fast idle but I did track down the shifting problem. There's a wire on the transmission that I disconnected and forgot to reconnect... Classic "ID ten T" error.
Interesting thing... I went to start in this morning after being out in the cold all night and the idle was fine. But the Transmission still won't shift. I can go up to 25 mph. I think it stays in 2nd - but I'm not sure on that one.
I just replaced my engine. Runs great now, but the idle stays at 2200 rpms and the transmission won't shift. I'm leaning toward a vacuum leak - however i've replaced most of the vacuum hoses. Here are some of the other accessories I replaced in the process:

Answering a bit of my own question after googling and reflecting on the build. The flexplate only attached to the crankshaft in one position as the holes are indexed. This leave me just the CPS as suspect.

I'm in the process of replacing my 4.0 engine in my 1990 Cherokee with an automatic transmission. The factory service manual say to remove the upper bolts connecting the engine to the converter housing. Sound simple? Not quite! I have found one of the bolts by feel but can't get a wrench to...
WARNING - Driveway Shot!
Well, OK, maybe just wishful thinking...
We just bought this 1990 Larado on Thursday and took it for a test run today. This is on top of St. Joe Baldy in northern Idaho. Its got a 2" lift and a brush guard with Baja lights. Pretty much stock other than that...
I just got a 90 Cherokee with a np242 transfer case. It doesn't seem to go into low range. Hi work great. I can't move it out of Hi to Low while in gear. Put it in neutral and and the lever moves all the way up to the Low position, but doesn't engage.
Any ideas of what I'm facing?
