    Going thru oil

Yep, that's what I thought! Lotsa places fot oil to leak from there on a 4.0- valve cover, diatributor, oil filter, oil filter adapter, oil pressure sending unit... "High and front" is a good rule of thumb to follow when trying to track down the source of a leak. That is say that leaks...

    Going thru oil

Which side of the block has oil on it, driver or passenger side?

    Odd Misfire - P0305

Combustion gases that make their way past the piston rings. Happens on ALL piston engines to varying degrees (hence part of the reason we do oil changes- those blowby gases and contaminants get trapped in the oil), but an old, shadetree mechanic trick to check for EXCESSIVE blow-by is to pull...

    Skip/Misfire at Idle

Try pulling your throttle body and giving it a good cleaning. Shouldn't cost anything more a new throttle body gasket (couple of bucks at the part store), some brake or carb cleaner, some Q-tips, and a couple of paper towels. Take your time, take it as far apart as you can, (or deel comfortable...

    Odd Misfire - P0305

What's your cylinder compression look like? (Note: to PROPERLY do a compression test, you need the engine warm-ish, with the throttle butterfly open, and all spark plugs removed.) Try also swapping your spark plugs around. You don't necessarily need to swap all of them, just #5 and whatever...

    Gates Rubber Garbage

Gates part number for what I had is K061025. Didn't seem like it was packaged wrong. And their website says it'll fit '89 XJ s***boxes with a 4.0. Seemed to be about the same length as the old belt, so I've no idea why it wouldn't go on. I've got a different sized pulley somewhere? Thing was...

    Gates Rubber Garbage

    1. It p***ed me off THAT BAD. 2. I don't want the next guy getting a part that doesn't work for him. 3. O'Smelly's is kinda "eh" about returns on parts that you installed. Or tried to install. I don't think they would look very kindly on the small chips and chunks out of the belt from me...

    Gates Rubber Garbage

Bought a new Gates serpentine belt (don't have the exact part number off-hand) from O'Smellys' to replace my old... I don't even know who made this thing, all the letterings worn off. Wish I did though because the damn thing ACTUALLY FITS. The new Gates one though... Before somebody jumps in...

93 4.0 crank but no start. Help

Make sure your parking brake is on or chock the wheels (or better yet- both) and put the transmission in reverse. If your neutral safety switch is good, you SHOULD see your reverse lights come on.

Yet another Renix high idle thread...

Update: Got it warmed up, no problems driving, transmission shifts through all the gears fine, downshifts seem a little late/harsh, but nothing unbearable. Connected a vacuum gauge to the rear-most vacuum port that runs to the axle disconnect and HVAC stuff, transmission in park. Got a...

Yet another Renix high idle thread...

The rough idle had been going on for a while, the high idle started after removing the throttle body, disassembling and cleaning everything, putting it back together and re-installing. Just adjusted the TV cable and took some preliminary vacuum readings. I think I'll make my high speed bombing...

Yet another Renix high idle thread...

'89 XJ 4.0, automagic, 4x4, no engine mods. Pulled the throttle body off today to clean it (trying to narrow down a rough idle issue, it needed cleaning anyways.) Pulled it all apart, IAC, TPS sensor, throttle butterfly, shaft, everything, and cleaned it all out with carb and choke cleaner. Put...

Blower fan only works on high?

This. The factory system varies the blower motor speed by passing current from the blower switch through a series of resistors anyways, so... The factory system is bad about melting blower switches though. There's some write-ups floating around about preventing that by installing relays, so if...

Son of a... front brakes lessons learned

Well, caliper finally came in, so I decided to work on the front brakes on the XJ tonight, '89 with 4x4. One side went pretty well, no major problems, but the other side, Holy Jeezless... Just when I thought I had gotten every lined up and in place just right, that caliper would just NOT go on...

    Almost free !!!

Lucky bastard(s). I'm jealous. $2,000 for concrete work is still a sore-d*** deal for a lift, and for a 2-post, 4-pointer at that. Was helping pops with a brake job yesterday and man, a lift would've been nice! How thick are you gonna pour the concrete?
