    You could also do an XJ/XJ bastard pack for the rear. My brother had two broken springs so we got some "new" packs from the JY and cut the eyes off the main springs and added all of the leafs to the pack (minus the broken springs) he netted a solid 2.5 inches.     would this slightly damaged axle shaft still work?

    It doesn't look too bad. How is the U-Joint. It doesn't look like the shaft itself is that bad amd the splines look okay. If it was me I would find someone with a sand blaster and get it cleaned up and then replace the U-joint. Just take it easy at first.
