rough idle at cold start up.

Temps have dropped down to the 30s-40s in the mornings and evenings. When I first start up my 96xj when it's cold it will idle a little rough until it warms up, or I drive it around a bit. Got any thoughts? Both O2 sensors have been replaced less than 8,000 miles ago.

    Spark plugs are white

I posted a week or so ago about a problem with overheating and a rough running 4.0L in my 96xj. Yesterday I pulled three spark plugs to take a look. They all appeared to be very white in color. They are regular champions from Napa. I have since diagnosed my overheating problem (bad aux fan...

Rough idle from sitting for prolonged time.

To make a long story short, I have a bad Auxilary fan relay. I pulled a trailer (twice) yesterday in the 90 degree temps and left my xj idling. With the bad relay my electric fan didn't kick on so it got pretty hot...between 210 and the red...past normal operating temp. I discovered this...

    Bad coolant temp sensor???

Sorry, it's a 96xj with 182k and probably original coolant temp sensor. Note*** My Heep was not in the water at all, not even my tires. It was our neighborhood boat launch and we don't have a legitimate launch ramp. I kind of dump the trailer down into the river. About 6,000 miles ago I...

    Bad coolant temp sensor???

I pulled two pontoons out of the water for the season. I had to use 4low for the steep grade. I left it idling while hooking up and unhooking. I noticed it ran rough from the tailpipe, so I hopped in and blipped the throttle. It bogged down and then came back up and idled really rough...

Lowspeed loss of power and then backfires.

Problem: 96xj with 176k on the ticker. 4.0L. Lately this problem has been occurring more and more often...it seems to happen after I've driven for about 5 miles, and then let it sit for 5-30 minutes. I'll get back in, start it, drive off and if it gets to about 1500-2000rpm in 1st gear it'll...

    Please help, Code 72

Yes, it's a year later and I'm still getting code #72 on my 96xj. Has anyone else had this before? I'm now at 175,000 miles. To be honest, my 'aft' catalytic O2 sensor is original. I thought if it were toast it would throw a different code.

Ubolts from Rusty's, how much longer?

I need to order some new pinion shims. I'm upgrading to steel since the crappy aluminum ones have pretty much disintegrated over the years. I was going to order the ones from Rusty's. Does anyone know if they come with 5/16" center pins? Also, I need new Ubolts. Can anyone tell me how much...

    What causes tire scrubbing/scallop effect?

I had my son help me measure this evening. I'm out by about 1 - 3/4".

    What causes tire scrubbing/scallop effect?

Hmm, interesting. How can I check if I'm running dog legged? Where's a good spot to measure to under the Jeep? Actually, the more I think about it...I have been running a Rusty's 3" lift and when I installed the 4degree shims the centering pin wasn't sticking down very far. It's quite...

    What causes tire scrubbing/scallop effect?

I changed the rear axle bearings on my 8.25" rear and decided to rotate the tires while I was at it. I noticed that the rear tires were scalloped. I could feel it while rubbing my hand over the center tread while the tire was rolling down the driveway. The lugs on both sides of the tires are...

Axle bearing noise while rotating by hand normal?

Bearings are pressed into the tubes. I have my buddies slide hammer with some fancy bearing puller tabs. This axle has 170k miles on it, so they're probably due for a change. I plan on pulling the axles out this weekend to take a look. I'm hoping the axles themselves are not pitted or...

Axle bearing noise while rotating by hand normal?

Nope, I'm positive the noise is coming from the outer bearings. If I put my ear right next to the axle flange it's obvious the sound/feel is coming from the outer bearings.

Axle bearing noise while rotating by hand normal?

I hope this question doesn't come off as being too stupid: I replaced the rear brakes a couple days ago and while I had the drums off I rotated the axle by hand (it's 8.25 rear end). The outer bearings are roller bearings and I could almost feel each roller as I turned the axle by hand. Is...

Do I need new axle shafts if bearings are bad?

Anybody got any spare shafts they're willing to part with...for a fee of course. Aside from pulling the shafts, how can I tell if I have 27, or 29 spline shafts? My xj is a 96 if that helps.
