Jeep Commanders

Doesn't one or a couple of you one one of these critters? I have some questions about them.

If you own one or know who on the board here does, let me know. Thanks.

I have one and love it! Mine is 09 Hemi Limited and loaded out.

12.5 city and 19 highway, its basically a XJ on steroids and unfortunately IFS.

The rear axle is a "full floating" 29 spline 8.25

Stay away from the 06 models, they are the first year and have the most issues which really isn't much. Don't bother with a 3.7L if you plan on towing. The 5.7 has 7400# tow cap.

Do you ever tow anything with it? How does it affect the mileage? One of the bigger complaints I've heard is a smallish fuel tank. How much does it actually hold and what kind of range do you get?

I know the have a third row seat. If you took that out how much more room is there than an XJ?

As far as the ifs goes. Does it seen to be pretty stout?

My jeep has almost completely rusted out and I want something bigger, newer and nicer. With the type of excursions I'm doing I think one with a small lift, moderate tire size and a locker in the rear would be all I need.

i don't know what models and such are the difference but i've only seen two that had a transfer case with the 2wd option (both were the owner of tuff country's too) all ecept those have had full time 4wd quadra drive. which i guess isn't bad but wouldn't help the fuel mileage i'd think. when i asked kelly why his has that he said the ones with the trail rated badges arn't full time :dunno: don't know how true but just some info for ya.

if you know sam down at teraflex go hit him up to mess around with his, it's mildly lifted and has the hemi.

I pretty much figured there wouldn't be a 2wd option. None of the later ZJ, Or WJ's with a v8 offered them so I don't figure it would be any different. If they do though, that's a bonus.

The quadra drive system works pretty well for what it is. Not planning on using one for hard core stuff that might be all I need though like you said at the cost of MPG. Of course the most I have ever got out of that pig of an XJ is 12 mpg so in the end I might be coming out ahead.

I have towed light with it, 3k maybe. I'm saving money for a 16' car hauler for the heep. It holds 20 gallons so i go about 230 in town and around 300 on the highway. When i towed 3k I averaged 16mpg in tow/haul mode. That traler was a 12' box so it drags a lot of wind.

The third row seats are removable, which makes the cargo area much deeper. Some of my XK buds have made storage areas where the seats recess into for tools and recovery gear. More room than a XJ, about the same as a WJ or WK.

As for everyday driving, I love it! It is stout. I haven't had one single issue with it. Mine has remote start, MyGig Nav and hard drive, iPod ready, back-up cam(nice for spotting trailers) sun roof, tow package, HID's, auto leveling headlights, leather, built in power inverter, you name it, its got it!

My XK has the QT2(has 4 low lever), most Hemi's have the QD2(no 4-low) which has the electronic LS diffs. My XK is full time with open front, LS rear. Its a tank in the snow. I haven't seen a XK without the "Trail Rated" badge on the drivers side so I can't attest to one without. They do make
2wd XK's.

I wheel with several Commanders and they do very well off road. There are many lifts available as well as front and rear bumpers. I plan on lifting mine as soon as its paid for. For a safari rig, I'd say go for it. Not so much for rocks or deep mud but they can handle anything in between.

I have never regretted buying my Commander and I like it as much as the XJ's but for different reasons. I plan on driving mine until I die along with my XJ's

I have a friend that I wheel with. He is quite happy with it, and I and quite impressed with how capable it is. He has a mild lift, and slightly larger tires. Seems like a good choice for a newer Jeep.

Not that it adds to your thread, I just want to mention that there were WJ's offered with the 242 transfer case. That gave the 2wd option in a V8. I can't speak for the ZJ, but I've seen the WJ in person. A guy I work with had it before it got wrecked. His was a '00 and mine is a '99 with quadra drive. We compared fuel mileage and he might have gotten about 1 mpg better than me. (Your mileage may vary)

Hmm. That's interesting. I've always been told that jeep wouldn't put the 242 behind V8s because of strength issues. After all of them I've seen blow up behind a 4L I'd be nervous with one behind a hemi.

The XK does not have the 242. My QT2 system uses the NV245, the QD2 has the NV247(I think) and the QT1 has the NV140 which is a joke!

Some 3.7L will have the QT2 system, which is a great systym and will give you 3.73 gearing in the axles.

All 4.7L have the QT2 system and some have the QD2 system.

Most Hemi's have QD2 but I have a rare bird with the QT2 which is a very solid and reliable system and much less complicated than the QD2.

One thing worth mentioning about modding a Commander is that the front diff cannot be re-geared, there are no other gear sets available for it other than the two offered from the factory(3.07 and 3.73)

The full floating 8.25 will accept any 8.25 gearset from what I have read. If you have the QT2 system you can run a full case locker in the rear if you choose. Whatever fits the XJ 8.25 diff will fit the XK 8.25 diff but from the diff out, its a different story!

Hmmm. No gear sets. That could be a deal breaker.

Well you are limited on tire size anyway so i doubt gearing is a issue with the Hemi under the hood anyway. Mine has more power than I will ever need and I still haven't pushed it past 4grand yet.

I'll be pulling a trailer everywhere I go. Gearing is pretty important. I'll look into it a little more.

Thanks a lot for your input. It's exactly what I was looking for.

I'm trying to convince my wife to sell the Sienna and get a Commander. Her only hold up is the accessibility of the 3rd row seat, which is a necessity for us. She thinks that it's hard for kids to get in and out.

My 10 year old can get into the rear seat with no problems. The rear seats fold and flip forward allowing easy access. I will say that if your kid is over 5' tall, they are going to be uncomfortable. Also with the third row seats in use there is no cargo space and rear vision is limited(back up cam helps this situation). If you are going to travel with the third row in use you better get a cargo trailer or a roof-top carrier.

We tow our mini toy hauler, its a 6'x10' box trailer, we just throw all of our stuff in there and not really worry about even using the cargo area of the XK even though we rarely use the third row.

That might be an issue then. My 6 year old is 4'5" already. If we were to get one we would definitely put a roof top carrier on.

that is a really interesting rear axle setup they use. It appears to be a full floating shaft with a unit bearing that bolts on outside it - almost like a cross between a conventional full floating axle setup and the halfshaft / bearing configuration on an independent suspension.

My parts catalog indicates 3 gear ratios are available for the frontend (3.07, 3.55, 3.73) but they aren't really the best ratios, so that's no help... it is too bad no one has determined the important specs (hypoid offset, ring gear inner diameter, outer diameter, bolt circle diameter, offset from ring gear mounting surface to pinion centerline, etc) and started making 4.10s, 4.56s, and 4.88s for them. I guess it's probably somewhat of a niche market.
