Well, I actually made it back from Pismo with out trying setup permanent residency on the beach.

Had a lot of fun and even did some wheeling. I got a nice camp site right out on the beach neer the end of the camping area.

We saw lots of wildlife like pelicans, seals, coyotes, and dolphins.

Pulled out a lot of trucks with the tow rig.
This one took two trucks to get.

But I actually did have to pull my own stuff out after to much skinny peddle was applied to the tow rig, snapping the u-joint on the front drive shaft.

But never fear for we have XJ to the rescue, after I rode back to camp and got it anyways.

Then of course one stuck vehicle atracts another to see why they got stuck.

Unfourtantly there was some sad news, a local duner was killed sunday night, I don't know what happened but we saw all the rangers were on top of comp hill and they were winching out a quad in the bowl on the backside of the hill and you could plainly see a body bag next to the quad.

My condolences are out to the family.

This actually was I think the fourth death this year at pismo which is above average and all the anti-ohv people are of course demanding that the dunes be closed to all motorized vehicles.

Come on...didn't Rich tell you no pulling in reverse. Way too much load for the front ring gear.

Looks like fun, maybe next year.
looks like he's winching not pulling ;)

doesn't the same forces apply to the rear ring & pinion when pulling someone forwards?
and how does the sand treat the xj's, i know in alaska the silt would get everywhere and destroy just about everything on a vehicle, but the silt is alot finer i think

no. gears are designed to push the truck forward, when going in reverse you are putting the stress on the opposite side of the gear teeth.

Hmmmmm, article?

Nice pics, dude!! BTW, if you have a sweet, running XJ out there, why the heck were you duning the TOW RIG. That should be a cardinal rule somewhere lol: no duning the tow rig.

Sounds like fun though man, I still have never been there - Been to Glamis a bunch of times, though, I guess sand is sand haha.

No way, Pismo doesn't hold a candle to Glamis. Pismo is about a quarter of the size in area and a quarter of the size of the dunes. If you think Pismo is sweet go to Glamis for a real experience.

Pismo is fun during the summer when Glamis is way too hot though. Cool pics and glad you made it home ok.

I can't fit two kids quads in the back of the XJ, I like to take the kids out to the back side of the dunes to learn before I release them on the general population, I need to have confidence in the kids ability to follow me before I ride them any where near the rest of the idiots.

I was out there a few weeks ago, had a lot of fun. We took a TJ out and almost put it on its side. We also took a trip to the casino where i turned 20 bucks into 1000. I only wish i had my MJ out there because to me Tjs are too short.

I have not been to Glamis in years, but spent quite a bit of time there back in the day. Granted, Glamis' dunes are taller, steeper, and occupy more acreage (at least accesable areas), but Pismo's dunes are more suitable for heavier vehicles such as Jeeps and lesser HP rails. The constant moisture in the air keeps the dunes a bit more hardpacked and there was almost no where that my stocker XJ could not go, given some imaginative lines, but offer plenty of challenging areas for everyone. The demographics at Pismo is what really shocked me. It may be like this in Glamis now, but I saw that probably 90% of the rails were oldschool VW powered beam cars and the rest were either beater waterpumpers or bling bling long travel rails.

There were more people with built, not bought, rigs than Glamis which is why I think Pismo outranks Glamis.

Both have there strong points so I say lets wheel them both and then just to confuse things some more we can do St. Anthonys in Utah.

Dumont is nice too, but way to steep for any kind of jeep....except maybe larry minor jeeps.
