San Juan NF Travel Management Plan Meeting Nov. 8th

The San Juan National Forest will hold a Travel Management Planning meeting in Durango on November 8, 2006. The meeting will take place from 7 - 9PM in the Fort Lewis College ballroom, the ballroom is located in the student union building. We urge all who enjoy motorized access on Southwest Colorado public lands to get involved in this process on a high-priority basis.

Although the SJNF's Travel Management Plan is not scheduled to be announced until 2009, they are fast-tracking the process. Local anti-motorized forces plan to not only block any expansion or rationalization of existing motorized routes within the San Juan, they plan to use the Travel Managewment process to push for a drastic reduction, if not a total elimination, of motorized recreation withn the SJNF and adjacent BLM lands. They are backed by numerous, well funded out of State radical green organizations in this effort.

Simply put, if the motorized community does not step up to support a reasonable Travel Management Plan for Southwest Colorado, the SJNF will have no choice but to be directed by the wishes of the radical green minority. Much is at risk here, including the Rico & Mancos Loops, Ophir & Black Bear Passes, Beaver Meadows, Elwood Pass, the entire Silverton / Animas Forks area and the SJNF sections of the Alpine Loop.

Those interested in, or already planning on, attending please contact the San Juan National Forest Travel Management coordinator, Mary Blanchard, at (970) 385-1319 and ask to be placed on the distribution list for the Travel Management Plan. See the official press release at:
