Steering Stabilizer...

Alright... found a new ailment on the Jeep... Y2k XJ 4WD, 52k miles....

When I went underneath to doublecheck my front diff fluid (it's been
"weeping" just a bit for a while now) before a 600-mile roadtrip, I found
my steering stabilizer to be covered with oil!! This certainly was NOT this
way a month or so back when I changed the oil.... I woulda noticed it!

Do they tend to fail "all at once"?

In a probably-related topic, the Jeep's steering has felt a bit "loose"
recently... as though nothing is "stabilizing" it when it hits (very common)
bumps and ruts in the road...

How much money are we talking for a fix... and is there anything special I
need to know before diving headlong into the project?

Thanks!

Is is a stock stabilizer? If so a replacement isn't that much. two bolts to undo and replace. Pretty easy.
If it's aftermarket, anywhere from 35-60 depending on what you want. I run an Old Man EMU stabilizer on mine. Really tightened up the steering on mine. Juice
