Im not sure if this has been posted before but, I found this while doing research at work today. Looks like it would be a blast! Taking it just a little slower than normal lol

They had two of them running, one finished. One of our members worked on those rigs - but I'm not sure he wants to out himself here. There was a lot of secrecy on those builds.

The one that finished, finished over the allotted time IIRC.

It was a cool (very friggen expensive project) for them to do, they had 3 people in each of the rigs. Driver, Co-Driver, engineer. Each of the engineers that helped build and design these rigs had hands on experience with them and mechanical aptitude so they were able to help fix them when they broke.

Besides the 2 racing, they had 2 on flat beds that were being used as "recovery" rigs, basically they were the same thing just used to help extricate the race rigs when they blew up. In addition they had a bunch of mid liner sized rigs (think like the trucks utility companies use) with spare parts, equipment, people ready to work on the rigs. Plus they had suburbans running around full of guys ready to work on the race rigs.

Looks a lot like Oshkosh's M-ATV. Since these things are getting shot at and blown up on a regular basis downrange, I'd hope that they could complete a 1000 mile race in the desert.

That is an M-ATV. ;)

A 1000 mile race is still a bit more punishing than what the rig is likely to be put through in Afghan or Iraq.

I was there at the technical inspection, and ask them about this rigs, they are rigs that race at the Dakar rally, since Roby Gordon has been racing Dakar, they came over to see if it really was that of a hard race, it looks like they didn’t count on the hard Baja terrain to put some stress on their rigs, yes just one finished the race. At the starting line, they roar and smoked like if they were going to eat the Baja.

Diesel-Electric Advantage
The ProPulse system is said to increase fuel economy in rough terrain, as compared to non-hybrids. Another benefit is there are less moving parts to fail. Keep in mind that this system does not need a transmission, transfer case, or driveshafts. There are also no batteries to maintain or replace.

This Oshkosh truck uses ultracapacitors to deliver bursts of power for acceleration. Regenerative braking recharges the ultracapacitors, which are faster at charging and discharging electricity than heavier batteries. This system also reduces maintenance, since the brakes won't wear out as fast, and the full-electric drive applies the torque closer to the wheels-where the work gets done.

Oshkosh claims the ProPulse system reduces the vehicle's emissions and is extremely safe to work on, as the stored electrical power can be depleted easily. On top of all that, this vehicle also has the ability to generate enough power to run your average neighborhood, hospital, or command center.
