UT- Gold Bar Rim, Rusty Nail

Handlebars

There are several things to do in this area. In order of difficulty starting from the easiest: Run Gold Bar Rim in-n-out. Do the Big Three, Poison Spider/Golden Spike, finish up on Gold Bar Rim, running from south to north. If that is too easy for you then Rusty Nail is your trail. It is accessed from Gold Bar Rim at waypoint 2004 on the following map and run to the northeast where it joins Golden Spike 1/4 mile west from the Golden Crack, which seems to be a must do as part of Rusty Nail. Turn around after doing the Crack (twice!) and head back over all of Golden Spike's biggest offerings, after which the return trip on Gold Bar Rim will seem like a highway. Don't miss one of the best photo ops in the Moab area on the canyon rim at waypoint 2214, especially at sunset. Traffic on Hwy 191, 1000 feet below looks like ants marching from there. The steep uphill drive to the edge is highly unnerving as all you see is sky out of your front 3 windows and you have to fight instinct the whole way!

The .gpx file includes the Big Three and Rusty Nail. Click here for the file:

  • 22## - Golden Spike
Here's a map:

Rusty Nail: These are from 2003, I'm sure the ledges are much bigger today.
