Caver bondage asside, the "noose" is a short length of rope to clip onto when reaching over the edge of the pit to get the main rope (should you loose footing while reaching). The knot or noose is really to keep one from falling off if one tried to repel the short rope. Its a safety thing.

And for the record, the XJ is really part of my caving gear as far as I'm concerned.

Yes. Visible radiation in the mid range of the spectrum (between the UV and the IR ends). It is only visible at the entrance of the cave mostly due to our decision to go caving during day-light hours.
