I've taken them apart before without one in it, running with no problems. Most timing sets don't even include one.

It's an 89'. I indexed the distributor and timing is on point now, if that makes a difference

New no, but once it get any slack in the chain........

Yeah but the rub block goes on the slack side, sbcs never ran a rub block.
