Can anyone recommend a machine shop that has experience rebuilding xj motors? I am in the Portland area.

Portland engine rebuilders (PER). I spoke to them years ago about building a 4.7 stroker and he knew all the parts/ lingo off the top of his head

I asked a mechanic friend who is a drag racer who he uses. He uses Portland Engine Builders. They know there stuff. When I called the owner answered the phone and seemed more than willing to answer my questions.
