Purchased this 89 about two months ago for $800. Ran great but needed a tranny. And had some overheating issues. Slapped a $200 transmission in and bled the coolant it and started abusing it.

After multiple trips to our land, I took the jeep to the gulches in Laurens Sc. I will try to link a few videos from the trip. As we were making our way back to the trailer the motor developed a loud nock and started running rough.

And here we are today. Motor is pulled. And tear down is complete. The loud knock was the cam sliding forward and hitting the timing cover. During disassembly I inspected the rods bearings and found pretty bad scoring. A full rebuild is in order. I would love thoughts as well as any advice as this is my first jeep build after owning several Toyotas.

What does the bottom end look like?

I'll unbag a few bearings this evening and post photos. But I thought it was pretty ugly.

Best I can tell it's the original motor. And the odometer has 230k on it. I'm assuming it's had a pretty hard life.

I'm planning to call around tomorrow. But does anyone have a rough guess as to what machining is going to cost? Also where should I purchase my master rebuild kit from?

About 15 yrs ago, I had my '89 rebuilt. Machine shop got the engine in pieces, we disassembled. Reused the crank & rods, bored 40 over, decked and balanced. Shop supplied bearings, pistons, rings, new stock cam and most of the gaskets. They also assembled the heads with new valves & springs after I had ported it. Was a very reputable performance machine shop, cost was just over 1k at the time. I still have it and am happy that I spent the money, but if I wasn't planning on keeping it a long time, I would have picked one from a jy, a lot cheaper. I did replace most of the accessories and upgraded to the later cooling system/t-stat housing, new flexplate and balancer, ect. Total cost was a little over 1500 at the time. Not including a 6-2-1 header, bored throttle body and a few other items. Hope this helps, know it was a long time ago!

That's roughly the cost I figured. Though I have thought about upgrading to a comp cam. And I have thought about going the jy route but the closest yard to me that has one is an hour away. They want 450 for a 200k motor. I Guess I should get on the horn to the local shop.
