Whining while driving in cold temps...

Hey all. I figure it's worth asking the crew for ideas before I start ripping things apart.

99 XJ, 4.0 (20k on rebuild), 231 (6 pinion planetary, jb sye, wide chain), d30 (4.56 & trutrac), 8.25 (4.56 & trutrac), aw4, 20k on timken wheel bearings, 20k on axles, 10k on CV driveshafts, 10k on chromos/ujoints front/rear

-Whining or constant higher pitch noise comes from front end when driving.
-Starts at 30mph and gets louder with speed
-Only happens when cold outside & XJ first starts driving. After 5 or 10 mins, stops.
-At 30ish mph, starts like a switch
-Shifting in/out of 4wd has no affect
-Shifting into different gears/neutral has no affect
-Reving engine doesn't change it
-Speed related, definitely rotational

Ideas? I plan to check fluids (axle/trans/tcase), grease ujoints and driveshaft slip joint up front, then open front diff cover. In my mind, sounds like it has to be axle or driveshaft related.

I'd check your front driveshaft. You could have a bad double cardigan joint and it's getting moisture in it that freezes overnight. Then as it heats up it melts out.
