1995 charcoal canister fuel vent port?

I have a 1995 with the fuel vent line disconnected and I searched with results showing other people confused and no answers. Which port does the fuel vent line connect to on the canister? The one on the forward side has a plug in it and the one on the rear side has a cross in it and is plugged (or check valve?) internally. If I connect to the capped off side, how is it absorbing vapor? This a CA car so no bypassing canisters for smog purposes. Thanks

Does anyone have a 1995 xj that they can walk outside, open the hood, look at the charcoal canister and just tell me which hose is hooked up to which port? PLEASE?
