How do you tell if a ball joint is bad?

Jack a front tire off the ground. place one hand under the tire & one above. Lift up & down. If you have excessive play than normally it will be coming from the joints. Have a friend watch while you lift to verify where the play is coming from.

I put the frame on jack stands, front wheel say 3-4" off the fround, use a yard long 2X4 piece of wood under the tire. Lift up a little, rather sharply, can usually hear them click. A flashlight will help, sometimes you have to get pretty close to see the play, at the ball joint.
