Spare Axle Shafts

OK, git a little dilemma here about bringing along spare front axle shafts on my trip here in a few weeks.

Obviously, with my other rig, I would carry spares of everything and anything.....but I also would have my tow rig along to store a lot of stuff in, too. This strip I will have to bring a lot more camping gear and squeeze it into a smaller vehicle, so I can't bring too many spare parts along.

My setup is going to be a front HP D30 with Alloy USA shafts running 32x11.5 Maxxis Bighorns. Even in my other rig, I only broke one Yukon alloy shaft.....so I'm thinking I shouldn't really have any need for spares this trip (But then again, I'll be gone for over 2 weeks and driving around 4000 miles).

I don't plan on running anything remotely difficult on this trip.

So.....what do you think?

If you can fit them in take em'. I use a 39"x20"x7" storage tote from Wal-Mart to carry the axle shafts in, it lays nicely in the rear cargo area between the wheel wells. In fact I put eveything in storage totes and at night I pull the totes out and put them under the Jeep and sleep in the back. If you are going by yourself and maybe one more person, you should have plenty of room for everything with the back seat down. My delima comes when the 2 youngest boys go with me, space gets tight then.

Here is a list of my trail gear/tools/spare parts that I carry when on the trail. I can get 3 people in the rig with all of this, but that does not include camping gear.

i guess it's a toss up of what you prioritize more. if space for other stuff is more of a premium, i guess you could always just leave them out and if one brakes, you could remove the inner shaft and run the outer shaft in the hub and 2-wheel it out of the trail. :dunno:

Two words.

Roof Rack. :D

It isn't like you have to worry about stability. Now that we have a dog that takes up twice the space as the average human and we have two kids in car seats, its the only way we can make everything work.

Roof Rack definitely comes in handy!

The axles do not take up much space. I usually tuck mine around /between other things. I actually haven't taken my spares out my Jeep in over a year.

You probablt won't break anything but I always go on the assumption that what I don't take with me is what I will break! :D

Leave the axle shafts home. I've had a set under my rear seat for 4 years, I hope thay are still there because I haven't looked under there since I stored them there. Part of the problem is the huge army surplus footlocker strapped on top of the folded rear seat that has all of the other spare parts, tools and emergency equipment... which I haven't opened in a long time either. As long as you know your Cherokee's common weak points and keep an eye on them you won't have any issues woth them. The problem is the unexpected failures.
