ARRA is pleased to announce the passage of H.R. 1904 in the House of
Representatives. H.R. 1904, the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003,
was approved on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 by a vote of 256-170. The
legislation, sponsored by Rep. Scott McInnis, R-CO, allows the Forest
Service to accelerate fuel reduction projects on 20 million acres of
forests with the most severe fire risks, either because they are overgrown
or because they have been infested by insects or disease.
ARRA is a strong supporter of this legislation as we believe it will help
to curb the devastating effects of mismanaged public forests. (7 million
acres of forest land were destroyed in last year’s fire season alone,
costing taxpayers roughly $1.6 billion in fire suppression efforts.) We
would like to thank our many members who have provided support for this
bill through letters to their respective representatives. We have seen
that our efforts as advocates of responsible forest management policies
truly do pay off.

H.R. 1904 will now await corresponding legislative action in the United
States Senate. ARRA will keep members notified of its progress in the
Senate and will ask for continued support for this legislation when the
time comes.
