Front end popping sound

I recently bought a cheap XJ for winter driving. When I put the transfer case in 4wd and nail in the mud I hear a loud popping or sometimes a growling from the drivers side front and no 4wd. The disco is in the other side (I think) so I don't think this is it. Any suggestions? :(

Need more info (welcome btw) What year, what axle etc.

could be....

A u-joint but hard to say without more info.

Info would be helpful! It's a 91 2 dr sport 4 wd. I don't think its a u-joint as it sounds more like gears growling. Are the hubs a 2 piece design? Sounds as if the splines may be weak. Can this happen? Are there any gears on the drivers side?

The only gears that I can think of are........

the ring and pinion. The popping might be the splines on the shaft skipping but I would not think so. I would check the front DS and the drivers side U-joint.
