If I build a steel tube bumper, do I need to re-enforce the unibody frame where it mounts to? Or can I weld it straight to the stock bumper mounts?

Are we talking about the front or rear? Is it going to be used for recovery?

look on bumper manufacturers websites, they usually show thier mounts. they are proven designs that work well, i wouldnt weld to stock bumper brackets but if you dont plan on tapping your bumper on a rock ar ever getting stuck and needing to be pulled out, or pulling someone else out, thne by all means, mickey mouse it all up son.

JCR Offroad sells a unibody doubler kit for front bumper mounting. Stiffens up the steering box area as well. I have it sitting in the garage with a front winch bumper awaiting a full day's worth of swearing and sweating.

You will need to reinforce the unibody where your bumpers attach. Here is a good start for the front mounts - HD bumper and tow hook mount
