i think my valve or lifter is going bad well if it is what would u all do just replace the head or get a new motor (well used) its a 98 xj with 160000

Replacing the head is not usually warranted - unless you've got a cracked casting. A "head job" will usually solve a valve issue (make sure you do a re-ring as well,) and pulling the head is required for changing lifters (change all 12 of them.)

What are your symptoms? It would help to know why you're thinking of this - especially if you want useful answers...

If you've got a lifter tick, you do have to remove the head to fix the problem. You do not have to replace the head. However, with 160k miles, price out a headgasket set and new lifters vs the price of a junkyard engine. It's a little more of a PITA to change the engine, but it might be a lot cheaper.

no such thing:D

Ever heard the word "teeth"? :D ;)

Got links? That should be all you need, depending on what's included in the gasket set. Since you'll have the head off, might as well replace all the lifters.

No.

The Valve lifters ride directly upon the camshaft, and translate motion from the camshaft to the rest of the valvetrain.

The pushrod rests in the lifter cup (at the top of the thing,) and extends to the underside of the rocker arm.

The rocker arm is retained by a pivot, and the other end of the rocker arm presses on the valve tip.

If you are going to change ONE lifter, might as well change ALL of them, since you're in there anyhow. DO NOT be stingy with assembly lube - or you'll wreck your cam (new lifters can go on an old cam in good condition just fine.)

DO NOT mix valvetrain parts - if you can't put it back in the VERY SAME place it came from, REPLACE it. Once valvetrain components get worn in to each other, they'll rapidly wear out any parts they're mixed with. FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED.

I saw this thread on the main page and the fact that you had replied to it and I knew immediately where your mind was. What a sick bastard.
