DRAFT PLANS RELEASED

"BLM Releases Environmental Assessment and Proposed Plan Amendment for Routes of Travel Designations in West Mojave Planning Area" (BLM California news release, 03/24/2003)
The BLM is releasing an environmental assessment and draft plan amendment of the California Desert Conservation Area Plan to complete the routes of travel designation portion of the West Mojave Plan Amendment, to meet an agency deadline. The EA analyzes the proposed routes of travel network that was developed through an extensive public collaborative process as part of the West Mojave Plan.

"Draft Management Plan for Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Released" (BLM California news release, 03/24/2003)
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Forest Service (FS) announce the availability of the Draft Management Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

ADVISORY GROUPS TO MEET

"National monument advisory committee meeting to be held in Palm Desert" (BLM California news release, 03/20/2003)
The BLM U.S. Forest Service will hold the next meeting of the advisory committee to the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument on Saturday, April 5, 2003. The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m., at the Palm Desert City Hall Council Chambers, 73-510 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert.

"Modoc-Washoe Stewardship Committee meets March 27-28 in Cedarville" (BLM California news release, 03/21/2003)

"Rails to Trails" (Travel+Leisure, 04/01/2003)
"Across the country, old railbeds have been transformed into the ultimate bike paths." One of the 10 featured rides is the Bizz Johnson Trail, managed jointly by BLM's Eagle Lake Field Office.

"Joint Ventures: Partners in Stewardship"
A national stewardship conference for citizen, organization, and government participants is scheduled for November 17-20 in Los Angeles. Seven federal agencies will host the conference - National Park Service, Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Fish & Wildlife Service, and the BLM. "BLM will lead free guided wildflower hikes" (BLM California news release, 03/21/2003)
Free guided hikes into wildflower areas will be offered through April by the Bureau of Land Management's Ukiah Field Office. The hikes into the Cache Creek Natural Area of Lake County are scheduled for Saturdays: April 5, 12, 19 and 26.

"South Cow Mountain area to be closed during motorcycle race" (BLM California news release, 03/21/2003)
The Bureau of Land Management will close the South Cow Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area to general use and through traffic during the Outlaw Hare Scrambles motorcycle race set to run Friday, April 4, through Sunday, April 6.

"BLM Schedules Special Wild Horse and Burro Adoption for Easter" (BLM California news release, 03/21/2003)
Some people may think of chicks and bunnies for Easter, but the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a better idea - - how about adopting a wild horse or burro to celebrate the arrival of spring?Â_It may not fit in an Easter basket, but the animals can offer many years of pleasure to their adopters.

"Old shafts post threat" (Bakersfield Californian, 03/23/2003)
Various experts including a deputy coroner, add their voices to recent warnings about the dangers of abandoned mines in the California desert. Dangers include holes where the unwary can fall more than 100 feet straight down into the earth. Agencies are working to close the most dangerous, but face a backlog of perhaps 40,000 sites.
