Ignition Switch oddity

Xtreme XJ

So I have a 96 Sport 4.0L with a AW4...
So the ignition switch has been acting up so I go to Y.T. and find a how to on a 95 and it all looks the same... so off to the parts house and I pull it, things going smoothly... then I see what appears to be a worn "flag or wing" at the end of the tumbler, I wonder is this the issue...
So I start looking around at picts. on the WWW and it looks as though my 96 XJ has the tumbler & ign. switch out of one of the below vehicles.
99-00 Dodge Light Truck Dakota
97-98 Dodge Light Truck Dakota
98-00 Dodge Light Truck Durango
98-02 Dodge Light Truck Pickup - Fullsize / Ramcharger
97 Dodge Light Truck Pickup - Fullsize / Ramcharger
99-02 Dodge Light Truck Van - Fullsize
97 Dodge Light Truck Van - Fullsize
98-02 Dodge Viper
97 Dodge Viper
97 Jeep Grand Cherokee
98 Jeep Grand Cherokee
00-01 Plymouth Prowler

What I have...

What I SUPPOSEDLY have...

Has anyone else ran across this ? WTF !!

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Neither one of those is an ignition switch. The actual switch is down lower on the column.

The actual electrical switch:

At least on the older jeeps with GM columns. Not sure about the 96, it maybe similar and is likely a Chrysler column

The entire column view

The part you posted is the ignition LOCK CYLINDER.

What problem, exactly, are you having?

I might add that my 85 jeep had an 84 lock cylinder in it because the column had been replace with one from a JY. Matched the one I pulled from the column, at Autozone, with the right one from their inventory on the shelf.

You are correct & I was a bit hasty in my explanation... they are lock cylinders that i posted.

I have the first one I posted... I wanted to replace the ignition switch that goes with it... notice the two ears at the bottom/tip... the other one I posted has a round/barrel at the bottom/tip... they gave me a switch that fits the 2nd. pict. I posted.

Mine is a stock never been molested switch.

So I go to the parts house and they give me a switch like your e-bay & Finely posts... a switch is what I was after... so on the surface got what I wanted...
The difference lies in where the switch & the lock cylinder interface...inside the hole. One is round barrel like tip, supposedly a 96... my stock one uses a tip with ears.

I guess I've just got a bastardized set up Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge/JEEP...everything I found shows my key cylinder as being a round/barrel tip. I have something else...

It's just odd...

I appreciate the help...

You could have a 95 or 97 part/column in a 96. That is why dealers always want the VIN number to find those odd issues. And aftermarket data is know to have bad data too.

Yeah, that's what i thought, but I can't get one that looks like mine on searches, no matter the year... the closest I get is a 97 ZJ... so I'll have to see if it works...

Thanks for the help...
Curt
