SPEEDOMETER NOISE AND/OR NEEDLE FLUTTER Model JEEP: 1987-89 MJ - COMANCHE XJ - CHEROKEE, WAGONEER Group Accessories & Electrical Bulletin No. 08-53-89 (Revision B) Date December 11, 1989 Symptom Speedometer Noise And/Or Needle Flutter SERVICE INFORMATION This bulletin supersedes technical service bulletin 08-5-89 (Revision A). SYMPTOM/CONDITION Vehicles may exhibit a fluctuating speedometer needle. NOTE: This bulletin does not apply to 1990 vehicles because they are already equipped with the new cables. DIAGNOSIS To prevent speedometer needle flutter, it is very important that the speedometer cables are properly routed and aligned. Even the new service parts replacement cables must be installed, routed, and aligned properly or they may cause the speedometer needle to flutter. Therefore, before replacing the speedometer cables, check the following: 1. Make sure the cables are installed and routed properly. Make sure that there are no sharp bends or kinks and that the cable is routed as straight as possible into the speedometer head. 2. Make sure the threaded cable connections are tightened securely. 3. Make sure the tach generator for the cruise control functions properly and is not binding or seizing. 4. If the cable alignment is correct and no other problems are found, the new service parts cables should be installed. PARTS REQUIRED NOTE: THESE NEW CABLES MUST BE INSTALLED PROPERLY OR SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE FLUTTER MAY OCCUR. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the adaptor gear at the transmission (2WD) or transfer case (4WD). 3. Remove the cable attachment "P-clip" at the left lower control arm pivot bolt. 4. On vehicles equipped with cruise control, first disconnect the upper speedometer cable from the tach generator unit and then remove the instrument cluster. The upper cable will then be removed along with the cluster assembly. On vehicles not equipped with cruise control, it will be necessary to remove the instrument cluster screws and then gently pull the cluster toward the steering wheel just enough to allow the speedometer cable to be removed from the rear of the cluster housing. 5. Totally remove the instrument panel cluster. 6. From under the hood, remove the rubber cable grommet from the bulkhead and remove the cable.
