Re: I'm Just Getting Started

Cash is 100lbs and is supposed to be on a diet. Berlin was the real pro, I don't know how many she completely ate, but I know there was one I took away from her and another that only half of its head left. The new dog seems more interested in the squirrels and rats in the trees and running along the fence.

LOL!

I have to laugh.

Varmint #4 and his teeth is a subject all in itself.

This is him with a chew toy he was happy to find in his new home:

No, that is not a potato. Unless perhaps fossilized. New rock. Yippee.

Today I took away from him a broken off corner of a paver, probably a 6-8-10 rectangle 2" thick.

And it is not as it he doesn't have chew toys. I just gave him a fresh squeaky a couple days ago. It still squeaks as of today. He was pestering me with it while I was working on the other side of the fence. (I make my own chew toys for him: Put a heavy duty squeaker inside a Gatorade bottle. Those usually make it past 1 day.)

He is not starving by any stretch either. Just very Mouthy. I had to wrap the walnut tree in the yard with PVC and wire and hook up an electric fence controller to it because he had gnawed his way far enough into the bark that he was pulling it off in shreds, largely in an effort to get to the squirrels. I think he figures if he can't climb the tree he will bring it down to his level.

Yes, Varmint #4 is a bit of a character. I think he gets it from the other 3.

Re: I'm Just Getting Started

At our last house we didn't have the red clay for dirt. My Great Dane could dig up gophers faster than they could run through their burrow. He usually caught them in two or three feet. I tried to make sure I found the little buggers first.

That's a pretty good size gopher.

As desperate as I am for Mexican food, I am not that desperate.

But I could put him in a flat rate box if someone else really wants him.

My dogs are in the 130 lb range and they don't catch a single one. I sure wish they would!

Re: I'm Just Getting Started

I have been chasing this gopher for a week now. New mounds showed up behind my shop. I think when the weather gets cold they start to cache some extra food. I noticed new mounds this time last year but didn't have time to really pursue them. Different ball game now.

Yesterday I found one of her food caches:

Figured I wasn't going to be particularly popular this Thanksgiving. But that problem solved itself last night:

Nice. I can't wait to be in the country so I can shoot these bastards.

Course, out there they won't bother me, will they? Sigh...

Re: I'm Just Getting Started

Shooting gophers requires a lot of spare time to kill. I have the patience, but not the time. Maybe after I kick The Varmints out and can join the ranks of the UOBs. 'Cept I am hoping to have won this war by then.

Now, shooting squirrels (no offense intended to present company), that is another matter. I have sent something on the order of fifty of them back to their maker this year.

My latest victim:

He was right in the area of the pear tree I planted last year, the tree that started this little war:

Re: I'm Just Getting Started

What's the name of that long skinny trap? Do you find them more effective than the Mcabee style trap?

Re: I'm Just Getting Started

I don't know the name of it. I found them at a local feed supply. I have three different styles and this one is by far my favorite. It is a wicked thing to set though.

It also has a downside in that it doesn't always fit in the holes. It is pretty wide when set. The gophers I have here are larger than the ones I used to catch in SoCal. I imagine the narrower tunnels might rule it out entirely unless you have soil that can be easily scraped away to widen the tunnel. As it is there are some times I won't bother to try to fit it into the tunnels I have here and will instead use one of the other styles.

If you are seriously interested in it I will try to find some details on it so that you can pursue it, or, if you want to pay for it, I can pick up one locally and ship it to you. IIRC, these are actually from a company in California. OTOH, knowing Kali, they may not even be legal there.
