Tale of Two Smog Checks

Well, it's that time again to renew my reg with the biannual smog check. I know my mileage has been pretty poor (like 10 mpg city) and I've been having an intermittent issue with #3 fuel injector.

So as usual, I get it smogged first to establish a baseline, see what's out and go from there. Here are my first test results.

So not to drag this out too far, I ended up putting my stock injectors back in instead of the 19# Ford Mustang. Getting those stubborn little guys out was a chore. A few of the pintle covers didn't make it. Not sure what happened to them. I tried to vacuum out any pieces that may have fallen into the manifold. I did change the filters and orings on the stockers. I also rigged up a nozzle on some TB cleaner to flush them out. I did pinch one of the orings in the rail, so I had quite a leak for a bit.

I replaced my O2 sensor with an NTK, replaced my IAC, my EGR Transducer and adjusted my TPS. The injectors got all new EV1 connectors. I opened up the main harness all the way back to the C101 connector and found a few bare spots on the #3 injector B+. I also refreshed all the grounds.

During all of this, I noticed some oil around the base of the distributor. I figured if I had to pull it to fix the leak, I might as well buy a new one with sync sensor, cap and rotor. Good thing I did. The innards were pretty trashed. I wrote that one up in this thread:

So now new distributor, cap, rotor, plug wires as well.

Somewhere along the way I found a few small vac leaks with my homemade smoke tester (vac line with a beach ball inflator end and a good cigar). Stuck my shop vac hose over the end of my exhaust pipe, set on blow, to feel for any exhaust leaks. Found a loose joint after the cat. Replaced the clamp.

All in all, what a job. This has been going on for the past 3 weeks since my first smog test. Here are the results from today.

PTL!! Good for 2 more years.

Awesome, they dont want you to do this, they want you to junk it! Can you fix the pictures? I recently got a 1990 that runs, but a but poorly. Read that the first thing to do on a neglected RENIX is the vacuum harness. Which is made new still.
