was this a water pump?

This came out of my '00 XJ after I discovered, through a couple of almost-overheat incidents, that water wasn't flowing through the engine anymore.

Looks kinda normal here, but...

It wasn't leaking or anything, either, just gradually dropped to zero flow. No, I have no idea where the fins went.... previous owner of this thing didn't take care of it very well, unfortunately, apart from regular oil changes.

And yet people that have water that bad still drink it. It amazes me. :)
 
If it were my tap water, the fins would not only be there, they would be twice as thick as they came from the factory. High levels of calcium does wonderous things to internals.

Always use distilled water.

Nice, clean half and half mix of that and Prestone is 99% of the contents now. The other 1% is possibly composed of leftover rusty crud that escaped the radiator replacement and flush... :laugh3:
